hotel/bed and breakfast has nice friendly atmosphere, excellent breakfast, and is in walking distance of old town York. Only issue is limited parking in back, but they managed somehow by having cars that were leaving earlier closest to exit path. Helpful with things like where to get laundry done, where to go for meals, and unusual sites in old town that we would have never thought of. Will definitely stay there again.
Everything from beginning to end was perfect..The host was friendly and educted. And paid great attention to detail....plus the a free sherry in the room was just the icing on the cake .I would atay here again and again.
St. Mary’s Guest House was everything we needed for our 5-night stay in York. My friend and I stayed in a twin room, which was clean and perfectly comfortable, albeit nothing fancy. Breakfast was great and the staff were just lovely. We enjoyed the short walk each morning and evening to and from the station or city centre.
We would return to this wonderful out of the way inn again. The staff was interested in our stay and our travels each day. They provided wonderful onsite information, as well as, a smile every time we walk in. The food at the inn was beyond expectations.
Very nice room ("Guy Fawkes")- comfy bed, great bathroom. The hotel is nicely appointed, great, quirky interior decor. The location could not be better for attractions and dining.
One caveat- those with arthritis may find the doors a problem. The knobs are round, slick and somewhat difficult to turn. Plus, the doors are heavy.
This was our first stop on a week long drive through England and Scotland, and we could not have been more pleased! The bathroom was almost as large as the room. The window was great, as it allowed for air flow. Breakfast was amazing and served in the conservatory. There were very sweet servers. They offered a menu to order from and it was all included with the room. The location was perfect. We were within walking distance of everything we wanted to see and do.
The room was very nice. A couple of small things: 1- It would have been nice to know there was a flight of narrow stairs to get to room, 2- Bathroom sink is blocked by overhanging cabinets, toothbrushing very difficult, 3- bathroom door drifts open against the bed unless closed and then the bathroom is very hot.
The was very clean and comfortable, we were in the back of the hotel which was actually nice because of how quiet it was. All of the staff were very friendly and professional. The breakfast was classic British full breakfast with the baked tomato…Excellent location not far from from the Micklengate and close to old town York. The bar and other sitting areas were very comfortable and welcoming.

Waggon and Horses is a charming Bed and Breakfast. The rooms are located over a (200? 300? 500? year old) pub, although not *directly* over the pub so that there was no problem with sounds coming up from below. The room was comfortable with a good radiant heat and windows that opened for fresh air. The beds were comfortable and the ensuite clean and functional. The slanted beamed ceiling and overall charm of the room and building (and York itself) made us want to stay an extra night.

The location just on the other side of the river from the older city gave us broad views of the riverfront and the cathedral beyond.
