Yucca Valley is mostly the gross commercial town before you get to Joshua Tree, but it has developed some cool businesses of its own. In particular, The End (vintage clothes) Cedar & Sage (yoga and wellness), and Tiny Pony (very fun hip food and bar)

This place we stayed in Yucca was close to Pioneer town, which I really enjoyed in Christ Desert Park. The downtown shops are cute and great places to eat.
