Learn more about Charleston
Beneath the university town veneer, Eastern Illinois University's Tarble Arts Center showcases rotating exhibits that might make you reconsider what 'college art' means. The historic Lincoln-Douglas debate site offers a tangible connection to political history without the textbook dryness. Fox Ridge State Park provides hiking trails where you can spot deer regarding you with casual indifference. The Lincoln Log Cabin historical site transports visitors to the 1840s, complete with costumed interpreters who never break character. Morton Park's duck pond creates the perfect backdrop for impromptu picnics, while the Charleston Alley Theatre stages productions in an intimate space where every seat feels front-row.

Charleston House Bed & Breakfast Inn
10/10 Excellent
"Wonderful experience! The house has so much history and our host Joshua was the best! Very cordial, knows a lot about the history of the house and is a wonderful chef!"
Baymont by Wyndham Tuscola
8/10 Good
"What needs to improve, the choices for breakfast. Be nice to have hot choices like most other places we have stayed. The dog fee is outrageous , I can see a one time fee but Not per night! We will try across the road next time… The pillows were great."
Days Inn by Wyndham Charleston
10/10 Excellent
"No pool"
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Mattoon by IHG
10/10 Excellent
"Back door did not lock at all, watched a guy ride up on a bike and just walk in without swiping a room key. He walked upstairs to a room and went right back outside! Seemed suspicious to me!"
Country Home Near EIU & Lake Charleston!
10/10 Excellent
"Property was very clean and beautifully decorated in a farmhouse style. Very cozy and comfortable! Came stocked with everything you would need. We had fun at nearby Aikman Wildlife Adventure in Arcola, Kayaking in Lake Charleston, hiking in Fox Ridge State Park a visit to Amish country in Arthur, IL. The kitchen, living and dining room were very spacious! The bathroom was very tiny so if staying with 4 adults - be prepared for this. Also there was a strange odor right outside the front entry and on the front porch. Maybe an animal urinated there. Owner may consider spraying urine odor control and planting things like lavender and rosemary to ward off animals from the property."
