I highly recommend the downtown/ Main Street area. Plenty of good restaurants nearby, Nerve Coffee in the morning, Roosevelt's for drinks and Tacos El Plebe are the best in McAllen. The food truck park is another great option for cheaper eats.

McAllen is an average medium sized city, pretty quiet and beautiful birds and butterflies all around. Not a lot to do but there are nature centers within reasonable driving distance that are wonderful. Definitely check out the historic areas.
