With the recent social upheaval in Ecuador, I was worried about the safety aspect of staying in Guayaquil. I needn't have worried. There was a solid police/military presence but it was not overwhelming and kids were out at night. Very normal feel.

I was born in Guayaquil Ecuador; this is my first time coming back after 15 years. There is a lot of places to visit and be safe. However, there is a lot of poor people and if you decide to rent a car and drive be very careful
