The hostel is situated in a residential area. Parking is available on a residential street. The check-in process with Travis was easy. Minor issue when showing me to my private room as someone else had the same first name and accidentally showed me to that room first. But was quickly corrected. The room itself was functional. The bed was firm. The shared bathrooms was clean, but showing its age with various broken tiles. I was only staying one night in Detroit and this is definitely an option I would choose again. As I was there so briefly I didn't use any of other amenities, so can't comment on those.

Relaxed hippie grunge

It's cozy and hippie-esque. The bathrooms are clean, there are grab bars and transfer seats in the showers. Just let the staff know if you need more tp or someone left a mess. The rooms could use a wipe down, floors are dusty. They provide fresh linens and a towel. The fridge was packed full, even though there weren't many people staying there. The staff lives in the rooms as well, maybe it's their stuff, or they need to do a regular clear out. It's family neighborhood, lots of kids, you can hear the call to prayer. Plenty of family run businesses.

Hamtramck Hostel despite the lower stars was a pretty good experience. It was a little further from downtown than I wanted it to be so you had to drive a bit to see the city. The surrounding area was much like the rest of Detroit; eclectic in some places, and rundown in others. I feel the vibe was good at the Hostel itself. There were some very kind hearted people. I liked some of the conversations we had. I enjoyed the idea of the shared space. I liked having access to the kitchen and laundry etc. For the two nights we stayed it was probably the most that I felt comfortable with. The rooms were pretty small and the beds barely fit me. Over all I would recommend this place because of the vibe and atmosphere but be prepared for what you are getting.

Good location close to downtown. Mattress was comfortable. Place overall is very rundown and bathrooms in particular were not clean. We arrived after check in deadline but called ahead and someone met us which was great. We didn't see any other staff after check in. Parking on the street was free and easy.

Travis was an excellent host, but this place is old, the building is old, old, old. It needs to be gutted and renovated. It’s just creepy and old, and not the cleanest. For example, why not pull the urinals out of the wall instead of trying to cover them up with a plastic bag? It’s just a place to lay your head for one or two nights and that’s it.
