The Florida National Scenic Trail stretches some 2400 km across Florida from Big Cypress National Preserve to Fort Pickens in the western end of Florida’s panhandle. Part of the United States’ National Trails System, the FT as it’s known, is divided into 4 main geographic regions: Southern, Central, Northern and the Panhandle region.
A mandated non-motorized trail, you can hike and bike the FT or explore on horseback. There are plenty of swimming spots, picnic places and camping sites in many sections of the trail too, so spread out a blanket and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Leave the bikes at home on this winding pedestrian-only trail through the Everglades National Park that starts at the Royal Palm Visitor Center, 6.5 km from the park entrance. The short loop trail goes over sawgrass marsh and freshwater slough with views over the prairie and water. Popular for its abundant wildlife, you may spot alligators, turtles and plenty of anhinga birds, also known as water turkeys.
The Anhinga Trail makes for a great spot for sunrise or sunset views over the water and sawgrass, and thanks to its short length of just 1200 metres, even little ones can be persuaded to make this hike.

The Snake Creek Trail which connects North Miami Beach to Miami Gardens is an easy hike or bike along a paved 10.5 km route along the Snake Creek Canal. Truly a neighbourhood connector, this trail meanders past houses, schools and businesses, and is a popular route for locals.
Although the canal is dotted with palm trees, there isn’t much overhead cover on this trail, and it can be overwhelming in the heat of the day. Try early morning or just before sunset for a more pleasant experience. Spot locals fishing, kayaking or even jet-skiing out to Biscayne Bay along the canal.

The Jetty Trail at Convoy Point is a few miles south of downtown Miami at the end of SW 328th Street in the protected grounds of Biscayne National Park. This family-friendly, easily accessed, 1.3 km out-and-back trail is part boardwalk, part gravel/sand.
Begin at the compass rose to get your bearings at the Dante Fascell Visitor Centre and head past the interpretive panels taking in the statues on the “Fish Wall,” the nautical flagpole and the jetty walk bridge. The park is also home to the Park Service’s only underwater Maritime Heritage Trail, made up of 6 shipwrecks spread across the coral reefs of Biscayne National Park. Perfect for snorkellers to explore, you can only access these sites by boat.

Almost halfway between Key Largo and Miami, the Black Creek Trail follows the path of the Black Creek canal out to the narrow Black Point jetty trail. Follow the trail, part boardwalk, part sand and gravel right out into the water. Depending on the time and tide, it can stretch out quite far.
An excellent spot for fishing and birding, watch the waves and try and spot a manatee. In the park section of the trail, there are BBQ stations, public bathrooms and shelters, but this popular spot can get crowded on weekends so it’s best to enjoy the facilities mid-week.

Bikers are welcome on this trail through the Everglades National Park, southwest of downtown Miami, on a 20-km round trip, out-and-back trail on Long Pine Key Nature Trail. Pedal past exposed limestone and shallow pools shaded by palmetto and slash pine.
Bisecting pineland forest, the wide rocky trail, although flat, can be muddy, especially around wintertime, and spring and summer bring plenty of bugs so don’t forget insect repellent. Look out for basking snakes along the route. The Pinelands offers up over 35 km of connecting trails, so this is a great area for ambitious hikers and bikers to explore.
