Lovely clean bedding and towels. Great shower. Tea and coffee facilities and hair dryer and iron supplied. Dressing table with stool was a bonus. Car parking was ideal and access to room was up a stair rather than have to go through bar. Had a drink in bar on the 2 nights we were staying. Excellent quality of Sauvignon was on offer. Would definitely stay again.

We found this place by accident and what a great find it was! The staff were friendly, the food was phenomenal and we will definitely be staying here again.

Chech-in at the bar was simple and the room was spotlessly clean and tidy. The location was very good as it is a short distance to the city centre, hence quick to get around on foot. The on-site food and drink menu were fairly good and well worth a try. I can highly recommend the accommodation.

This is a tricky review to frame: to do justice to a stay which I enjoyed whilst giving useful information for others considering it.
All the staff I spoke with were friendly and helpful. All aspects of my room were clean and, although it was small it didn't feel cramped, except for not having space for a chair. It was close enough to the city for walking if you're fit enough to walk for 20-30 minutes. There is an onsite car park.
On the other hand, it's a pub so deliveries can be early and noisy and you are not out of earshot of the bar. There is no internal access to the rooms: you reach them via frankly challenging fire stairs; and check kitchen data for when food will be available.
As I say, I would happily stay again if I needed to; but if you're bad at stairs or have heavy bags, or if you are a light sleeper who needs to sleep in of a morning, it may not be for you.

Nice warm welcome, Ryan helped carry our luggage to room and explained WiFi code, nearest cafe for breakfast etc.We requested extra pillow and it was there, which is very good because we usually have to remind other hotels when we get there. Little things matter! Bed linen and towels very clean and fresh. Location was good, we took taxis into town but it’s walkable (20 mins) Taxi about £5 each way, about 5 mins. Friendly staff and customers and we had live music on the Saturday night. Didn’t eat there as we had previous dinner plans with family, but the drinks were very reasonably priced.

The hotel is well situated, it took about 15 to 20 minutes to walk to town, on a nice day it's a pleasant stroll. The room was very clean and spacious, the bed and pillows were comfortable.Tea and coffee facilities were also provided. The staff in the pub were very welcoming and friendly. We had an evening meal which was tasty and reasonably priced.
The only thing to take note of is that the rooms are above a pub and music is played so an early night isn't really possible, although there were ear plugs provided. Access to the rooms is via an outside steel staircase.
Overall I would recommend and would stay again.

Although staff were friendly, I was left waiting for an issue to be resolved and had to go back to the bar myself and still wasn't served quickly. I felt they were more interested in locals than guests. Dangerous outdoor stairs, slippery and ill lit, and very scruffy corridor to rooms which worried me. Booming from bar coming from door marked private right opposite rooms til midnight on a Monday, from the afternoon. Thus I couldn't be in, couldn't sleep, and it wasn't very warm. Very dangerous and awkward shower with high step and little space by sink, and water came out hot. Is quite far from the city, 20 mins walk to Monkbar (nearest gate), and it isn't in Layerthorpe, it's Heworth. Not lots of facilities arond, just a chippie and mini Morrisons, and some shops and cafes on East Parade. I saw few buses and it was a walk from my evening activities, curtailing my plans - yet when I got in, tired, I couldn't sleep thanks to the bar! I would like a rebate for the noise as that door is utterly unneccessary, and I've stayed in other inns, and we are often not near the bar and bars are often quiet or even shut on a Monday

Room was clean but no heating and no way to turn it on.
Quite noisy through the night as people going from room to room ( late)
Suppose our fault to book a room on top of a pub
