Top neighborhoods in Happy Valley

Rock Creek
Rock Creek offers a peaceful suburban retreat with lush green spaces and trails winding through Douglas fir groves. The neighborhood park showcases the Pacific Northwest's natural beauty, where you can spot local wildlife along creek-side paths. This family-friendly area provides a genuine slice of residential Portland life away from tourist crowds. Accommodations lean toward vacation rentals and bed-and-breakfasts with mid-range pricing. Though dining options are limited within the neighborhood, nearby strip malls offer casual family restaurants. A rental car is recommended as public transit is sparse, but well-maintained streets make cycling a pleasant option.

Sunnyside
Sunnyside offers the perfect mix of suburban calm and Portland access for travelers who want to stretch their budget. Hiking enthusiasts can explore multiple trailheads like Sunnyside Road and Park Mountain Lane. The neighborhood's quiet streets are lined with ranch-style homes and small parks where you can enjoy a peaceful morning walk. Golfers will appreciate Eagle Landing and Top O' Scott courses nearby. Dining options include family restaurants and familiar chains with reasonable prices. The MAX light rail connects you to downtown Portland in just 30-40 minutes without rental car hassles. Accommodation consists mainly of budget-friendly motels and extended-stay hotels with rates much lower than downtown properties.

Southgate
Southgate serves up that classic American suburban vibe with tree-lined streets and family-friendly parks just a short drive from Portland. Clackamas Town Center and Promenade offer retail therapy while nearby golf courses and the North Clackamas Aquatic Park provide active entertainment options. Green spaces like Southgate Park give you room to breathe and play. Getting around is simple with two convenient transit stations—SE Fuller Road Station and Clackamas Town Center Transit Center. Budget-friendly accommodations make this quiet neighborhood an affordable home base for exploring the greater Portland area. The peaceful residential setting offers a genuine glimpse into everyday American life.

The Porter Portland, Curio Collection by Hilton
"Great spot in the middle of everything downtown. Very clean and nice amenities even though the steam room was closed."
The Paramount Hotel
"Eric at the front desk was amazing. Friendly, kind, informative. He assisted with many queries and is an incredible asset to the hotel."
Red Lion Hotel Portland Airport
"The staff at this Hotel is amazing, thank you Jasmine and Josiah (front desk) SUPER helpful and friendly , also want to thank housekeepers Lupita and Patti for the fresh towels and being so kind. This hotel was so clean, the the staff was amazing and to top it off dog friendly! I highly recommend this hotel!"
Mark Spencer Hotel
"Great location and spacious rooms! Room was clean and bedding and bed were fabulous. Would stay again if we’re back in parking! Secure parking garage a plus too for only $36 a night!"
Courtyard by Marriott Portland City Center
"Great location at a budget price. Housekeeping is wanting so ask reception for towels and coffee supplies as needed. Better breakfast and dinner options close nearby than the in house restaurant. Due to extremely tight underground parking, a $52 daily valet parking service applies. Yikes! For a one of two night stay, a secure fenced in parking lot is available nearby on SW Oak street towards the river at $24 a day. We recommend a dinner at the nearby Ali Baba food truck lot and beer garden 2 blocks further down SW Oak Street. All TRIMET transit options are right there so download the HOP app and buy a daily ticket to take you ANYWHERE, most conveniently. Oh, you will see many street people around in this downtown business district, but we are never harassed in any way. Have a great time! Portland is well worth visiting in the Spring and Summer and early Fall."
Moxy Portland Downtown
"The experience met my expectations."
