Thor’s Well is an awe-inspiring natural wonder on Oregon’s coast, 3 miles (5 km) south of Yachats in the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. This bowl-shaped hole is carved from basalt rock and filled with swelling and crashing water, changing its appearance depending on the tide. At high tide, the water bursts over the top before rolling back and disappearing, as if down a funnel.
Stormy conditions add drama to the sight, although you should take care when the ground is slippery. Remember that ocean waves can be powerful. You’ll definitely want to snap some pictures of Thor’s Well. Take in the sight from viewpoints around Cook’s Chasm Pullout or walk down in suitable footwear to get closer to the action.

Whaleshead Beach is about 6 miles (10 km) north of the city of Brookings. Its name comes from the sea stack that resembles the head of a whale, especially when waves hit and water spurts from a rock channel at its top. A short distance south of Cannon Beach, Arcadia Beach Recreation Site is situated in a shady grove close to the highway. A trail there leads you to a long sandy beach, where you can stop and admire the sea stacks and the ocean. Under the right conditions, you might hear the “singing sands.”
The beach is a great place for a picnic under the Sitka spruce or for kite-flying, beachcombing and searching for agates. Hug Point Falls are a series of small, pretty waterfalls in the Hug Point Recreation Site near Cannon Beach. You’ll need to visit the beach at Hug Point when the tide is low, as the ocean often covers much of the beach and even some of the waterfalls at high tide. Consult the tide times before you head out.
