Noordermarkt in Amsterdam

Noordermarkt is a smorgasbord flea market in the Jordaan area in Amsterdam. Surrounded by cafes and restaurants, the city centre is a key shopping and dining location with plenty of selections available. The organic farmers’ market is hosted on the square every Saturday, and every Monday a regular market is hosted alongside a market primarily for textiles on the nearby Westerstraat street.

The history of Noordermarkt

Noordermarkt began in 1616 with an original name of Prinsenmarkt, which was the name of the canal inside the square. However, in 1623 the Noorderkerk church was completed. Due to its significant presence in the square, the name was changed to Noordermarkt.

Until 1655, the market area was more of a graveyard for the church than an actual market. In addition, during World War II, the people who planned the February Strike of 1941 to protest the Jews’ deportation by the Nazis first demonstrated in the square. A plaque to the south of Noorderkerk church honours this event.

Noordermarkt is near the local train station, the Royal Palace, the Canal Ring, the boutiques of Haalremmerdijk and residential neighbourhoods such as Kalverstraat and Dam Square. The market consists mainly of vendors selling household items, clothing and antiques, with many different food types.

With such a variety available, it’s best to either plan where and what to focus on ahead of time or visit multiple times to experience the entire atmosphere of Noordermarkt.
