Mercato di Testaccio is a busy marketplace in Rome’s Piazza Testaccio that, unlike many other Roman markets, is held in a more permanent structure. Greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers and sellers of cheese and dairy products offer their wares for sale in the plaza, where locals know to go for diverse and high-quality food.
Southeast of the center of Rome, Mercato di Testaccio began directly in the main square but moved to a nearby, more modern spot in 2012. Since then, the market has seen renewed interest from locals and greater interest from travelers, providing cultural dishes and atmosphere as superb as ever.

Lunch is the market’s specialty, and the bar Chicchi e Lettere, or Beans and Letters, is a popular hotspot for teenagers and young adults, serving coffee, wine, beer and snacks.
Mercato di Testaccio also runs a central seating area around a sizable variety of food stalls. While classic Roman foods are, of course, the most abundant, each stall has its own specialties and cooking techniques, so the same food may taste different from one stall to another. Max Caffe Piazzetta serves alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, while another popular stall, Morde e Vai, sells panini sandwiches.
Mercato di Testaccio is busiest on Saturdays, although the crowds consist mostly of locals enjoying some spare time as opposed to throngs of visitors sightseeing. All neighborhoods of the market are kept as fresh and clean as possible for all to enjoy.
Popular with visitors of all ages and teeming with an array of fruits and vegetables and gourmet street food, this market offers a great spot for good company, conversation and dining.
