8/10 Very good

Very unique location right in the jungle, close to a good beach.

What a gem of a hostel! Our private room had a beautiful balcony that overlook the forest and the beach. It was very clean and cozy, and the bed was really comfortable! Would definitely stay again!

I stayed 1 night here with family and really enjoyed it. We arrrived just at sun set and the owner met us. We went straight to the beach from the property via a forest track where you can watch the sunset. We had a large self catering cottage to ourselves and our room was ensuite. Very pleasant stay and really quiet location. I would definitely recommend it and I would stay again.

We loved this accommodation! Such a neat experience staying in the middle of NZ native bush land right on the coast. Super close to where we wanted to be & it had everything we needed & more than expected. Very cool experience whether you are a kiwi or international traveller

8/10 Very good

Basic accommodation. Set amongst native bush - notably Nikau Palms - is stunning.

8/10 Very good

The rooms were basic and clean. Water pressure was minimal. Given it’s nowhere near any town, not unexpected. The walk to the beach was good and surroundings were amazing.

Sleeping with the mozzies

Lovely location. Place could do with some TLC. Windows need fly screens or unit needs mosquito spray. As didnt sleep due to sharing the room with the pests. Am covered in itchy welts.

We like this place in nature but the equipment of the kitchen is not suffisant

Good stay but bring your food with you!

We stayed for one night, the room was clean with a comfy bed, full use of the kitchen including a stove, microwave, kettle and fridge. There was a large communal lounge area and two showers in our lodge which was plenty. Make sure you bring your food with you as there are no supermarkets for 40 minutes from the property and few restaurants that are expensive if you’re on a budget.

Quiet remote location with beach access, facilities have potential for a renovation

The property was fine, just what I would classify as modest accommodations. The access was a bit challenging.

A lovely stay at Te Nikau Retreat in Punakaiki. It’s basic but exactly what we needed and pretty good for the price. We stayed in Koru which is just a bed but that’s what we were expecting so it was great for us. Very close to the toilets. Good kitchen facilities. Shower pressure isn’t brilliant but it’s fine for one or two nights. Great location - just a few mins away from the Punakaiki rocks and only a short walk down to the beach for sunset which was recommended to us by the owner. He even gave us some insect repellent too. Only minor - but maybe try to put the lights near the signs in the walkway down to the beach as we did get a little lost on the way back to the hostel in the dark.

8/10 Very good

Room was adequate, sparse but had what we needed for 1 night. Internet was spotty at best and unavailable for much of our stay. The visiting Wētā birds on the deck made up for it!
David, 1-night trip

6/10 Good

It's a great spot, and easy walking to a fantastic beach. The kitchen and bathroom facilities were about average for a backpackers. The room itself was below average though. The door was closed with a bolt, but there was a gap all around it. There was a latch and a padlock for when we wanted to go out, and there was a strong musty/mouldy smell in the room. The bed was surprisingly comfortable though.

4/10 Fair

Difficult to drive in and out of reception then difficult to get out of our unit parking. Older run down ensuite unit. Full cooking facilities but dishes dirty. Nice ocean view

We appreciated the manager letting us shift our separate rooms to one two bedroom cottage at the last minute. As the heavy rains came during the night, we were beyond grateful that we were not in a tent or in a small metal "economy room" with no bathroom! We were safe and sound in a lovely two bedroom cottage with a well equipped kitchenette, large living room, covered deck and a walking path to the ocean (before the rain came). We were only there one night, checked in late and left early, but our time there was greatly appreciated.

Sehr schöne Übernachtung (wir hatten eine eigene Hütte), guter Zustand und alles was man braucht. Etwas abgelegen aber gerade noch zu Fuss erreichbar, wenn man die Tracks und so macht. Würde wieder hier übernachten.
2-night trip

2/10 Poor

We wanted to do a late check in to enjoy the day visiting some places, and we couldn’t because they never took our call, in which the booking description said to call them if we needed this. (5 phone calls with no answer, straight to voicemail). The place where we stayed wasn’t a room at all, it looked like it was a storage shed and they just placed a bed in there, the door didn’t close properly so the cold air was coming in as well as the insects. Linens were dusty and the duvet moldy. Room had spider webs and a lot of dust. We almost slept in the car that night but we were too tired and needed to lay down, so we laid down our own towels, folded back the duvet and slept on top of the sheets.

Cabin in the woods

Nice little cabin in the woods with everything you could need. The locals parked a little too far into the road so the rental had to visit the undergrowth a bit to get past.
