Nicely priced dog friendly accommodation in Newent

Perfect for our needs, which was dog friendly accommodation with the minimum of fuss. A continental style breakfast was available to order at a reasonable price. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout the stay. I would definitely stay there again.

It was clean and warm and excellent value. A new fantastic pub had just opened in the centre of Newent called the Wye Inn so we visited there. So much cheaper than the Cotswolds and it feels like real Gloucestershire to me. Not a tourist hot spot

Old school pub. Didn’t like the noisy road and idiots using it as a race track
Richard, 2-night trip

8/10 Very good

Traditional old building staff were nice and welcoming. Property needs alittle work. However we enjoyed the stay.

Difficult check in, but ok after that.

Checking in staff very helpful and friendly, accompanied to the room shown all facilities. The room was exactly as described. Its an historical coaching house on the main high street in an historical village/town. You can hear road noise and pub chatter. However, it was a very hot day and a warm muggy evening so the window was open fully so if closed this would have reduced any noise.

Disappointed

Friendly staff , not very clean , very loud music until 12:30 then lots of shouting and fighting when pub closed, unfortunately drug users in the pub and staff were aware

2/10 Poor

Horrific Place

The hotel was filthy. Noise went on from the bar until around 2am. No restaurant facilities, only a cold breakfast. Will never go there again and I would encourage people not to go there. Absolute waste of money. The carpet in our room was very dirty and torn. Noise from the street was horrendous both day and night. Car parking was through an arch just wide enough to take a medium sized car. The private shower room was down the hall, not very convenient. I have enclosed photos of the room carpet.

Old (historic) property and need to take this into consideration when staying. Once a coach house, I presume, the structure does not lend itself to ideal modern room sizes. I had something of a walk to my bathroom/toilet. Rooms comfortable, although matress had seen better days; nice clean sheets and well presented. Very noisy until pub kick out time which was well past midnight

17th Century inn needs some TLC

Stayed for a long weekend on my own to attend an event in the town. My first impressions were not great: the decorating looked tired with worn, grubby carpets and the paintwork was faded and discoloured. The sash window looked out onto the main road of the town. The top half didn't close properly, leaving a half inch gap which meant that a) it was draughty and b) I heard all the boy racers zipping through town in their noisy cars. My bathroom was a jaunty walk down the corridor past a couple of other bedrooms. Not good when you need to use the toilet in the middle of the night! Shower was cold each morning. I worked out that running the hot tap for 5 minutes would get the shower warmed up. Then one morning the shower head slid down the pole and hit me in the head! I got very little sleep because the pub downstairs was so loud until the wee hours of the morning, presumably when the punters were sent home. During my four nights there, the bin in my room was emptied once. Oh, and the hotel doesn't do food so be prepared to eat fish 'n' chips, curry or kebab! I never thought I would write this but I feel like I have been spoiled by Premier Inns!

The hotel is an old coaching Inn dating back to 1649 in parts. It has at least two cask draught ales on at all times with the usual array of beer, cider and lager on pressure taps. I tried the St Austell brewed Tribute bitter and found this very much to my liking. There was a loyalty scheme operating when I visited. Buy five pints of draught ale and get the sixth one free. The large TV in the main bar and a smaller one in the lounge produced a very good picture, easily viewed at distance being sharp in image. Bedrooms were on two levels, some with separate exclusive bathrooms (ask staff for info on which are which) Cleanliness is good and room facilities are good. The staff were most forthcoming for information on all aspects of your stay including a very warm welcome. Breakfast can be ordered if required for an additional cost. But any further meals are not available. Vehicular access to the small car park is via a narrow brick tunnel, as one would expect at an old coaching Inn and could be described as challenging (I have a Subaru Forester) However there is several car parks close bye and on street parking. Stairs to the first floor are quite wide but then they narrow going on upwards to the second floor. Again don't expect to find a high speed lift here, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the George. I found the quirkyness quite enchanting and the hospitality matchless. I would not hesitate to recommend a stay at The George if you want an experience full of character.

Parking ok but not on site. No hot water in the wash basin in room. Had to hold shower head by hand. Outdated equipment. Carpets stained and not very clean. Heating didn’t come on. But comfortable beds, and young staff very friendly and helpful. Room at front so traffic noise.

Needs a upgrade

Firstly booked it in advance but when I got there I wasn't expected The lady who greeted me was very polite and professional On the website it says Free parking well unless you have a fiat uno you can't get to the parking area was told if I parked on the road outside I would probably get a ticket But I could park at the Black Dog pub half a mile down the road in there car park The whole place was shabby stains on carpets the so called lounge area was dismal THE stairs up to the room were very steep good job I didn't have any medical issues the mattress on beds had. Past there day sheets had stains on them The shower was full of rust and mould Will attach pictures The steep stairs has no lighting and as I left at 420am it was very dark

a visit to Newent

The George is a pleasant, old fashioned hotel which, while lacking some of the facilities of such places as Holiday Inns or Travelodges, is comfortable and friendly and very popular with the locals. The staff are very helpful and co-operative. It is ideally situated in the centre of Newent We would certainly stay there again if in Newent.

Charmant petit hôtel assorti dun pub sympathique. Un petit bemol toutefois avec la SdB privative extérieure à ma chambre. Mais vu l'âge de l'immeuble, 1649, on ne pas tout exiger !
Michel, 1-night trip

8/10 Very good

The staff were lovely, showed us to our room. The room was stocked with mineral water and teas and coffees, biscuits. The pub downstairs had some good ales. The bed was very comfortable and the hotel was quiet, perhaps as we were staying on a Wednesday night. Located in the centre of Newent close to cafes and other pubs plus a good chip shop.
