Great hotel in am excellent location

This hotel is in a great location near to shops, bars & great restaurants. The rooms were spacious, clean with good facilties. There is 1 English speaking chap on reception & for everything else use google translate. Breakfast is basic but great coffee & decent continental selection & eggs. For the price, this hotel is a great choice & couldn't fault it. Would 100% recommend & book again.

This hotel would be a 20 out of 10 except, the beds are not comfortable. I hate to have to say that because I loved it so much, but I like to leave an honest review. The beds are very, very firm. Breakfast is also not good, BUT, the fresh eggs made your way make up for it significantly! The staff is very nice. The location was absolutely perfect. We had the family room that slept for it was spacious. It was comfortable. It felt like an Airbnb instead of a hotel. We were extremely happy with our choice. And even though the beds were not that comfortable, I would still probably choose this hotel again. Walkable to great shopping, easy, quick Uber rides to all of the places we wanted to visit, including Batman Alley. And I highly recommend going to Paul’s boutique pizza when you’re there!

We arrived late in the evening, exhausted and in the rain, having booked this hotel based on its excellent online reviews, particularly those praising the staff. Our experience was the complete opposite. The staff were consistently rude, dismissive, and unhelpful toward guests in general, but their treatment of non-Portuguese speakers was even worse. Their attitude was openly disrespectful, as though guests were an inconvenience rather than paying customers. No information about Wi-Fi, breakfast, or parking was provided at check-in. Nobody offered to help us unload our luggage in the rain, and staff made no effort to greet or assist us. Non-Portuguese-speaking guests were ignored and mocked. Five minutes after we finally reached our room, the front desk called to rudely demand that we return the luggage cart immediately. Breakfast was of very poor quality, and the server was extremely rude to guests who tried to order anything. The valet was equally unprofessional, appearing irritated at having to stop playing on his phone to collect our payment and retrieve our car. Other pedestrians warned us against waiting for our Uber outside because of the high number of robberies in the area. This was particularly concerning given that the hotel has a security guard inside the lobby at night. The consistently disrespectful treatment by the staff alone was enough to ruin our stay. The poor breakfast and lack of basic hospitality only made things worse. Definitely not worth the money.

Used to be much better in the past

I stayed at Matiz several times but will not return after the latest experience. Starting with unfriendly staff at the reception and breakfast that was so unmotivated and unfriendly that I started to believe something must really go wrong in that place. They gave the impression as they would really hate their job, so we didn't dare to ask for anything as they would anyway not do it. Room was dirty, especially the bathroom and the kitchen, everything was old and abused. Bed was very small and uncomfy. No stairs, so even for just one floor yo have to use an old and unsafe elevator. Breakfast limited with some hard bread they were probably serving during the entire week. Some cheap butter and jam, dirty, you could really see the lack of hygiene, so we were afraid of eating there. Very strange experience compared to how it used to be in the past.
