Great hotel with very friendly staff, welcoming feel. Larger room than what you will find in the area for about the same price. Large, completely separate bathroom (another place we stay has side by side shower/toilet with glass doors--a bit weird). I would not recommend the breakfast here-it was terrible.

Parking free and on site. Good strong coffee in room. Big bathroom by NY standard and we loved the robes and slip-ons. 4th floor King room was perfect. The Cellar space was enjoyable, serene with comfortable seating. Staff are friendly and accommodating. Wish there was a new robe available for purchase. A bench or two out front would be good. We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel 42 - great location steps from the subway. The neighborhood was very clean and walkable. We enjoyed some neighborhood restaurants. I always felt safe and it was very clean everywhere in the nearby neighborhoods. Our rooms were also very clean and we enjoyed some cocktails in the evenings in the cellar bar. A lovely week in Williamsburg Brooklyn!

Heads up on the non-refundable rate: they mean it. I booked 5 months out and tried to cancel 3 months out, and they said no - even though the hotel ended up sold out that weekend. I've never had another hotel refuse a cancellation that far ahead, so book the flexible rate if your plans might change. Once I arrived - it's a good location if you're out all day. It's close to the Hewes St. and Broadway subway stops, but it's still a ride into Manhattan. The lobby's cool and sometimes has free wine. The area looks a little grimy, but there's foot traffic at all hours, so it never felt sketchy. My main complaint - the walls are paper thin. I could hear my neighbors talking, their TV, and even their shower. The subway noise didn't bother me. Housekeeping is loud in the mornings too, with slamming doors, talking, and music in the hallway. The room itself had dead bugs by the window and a bedframe that wasn't clean. The bed was a bit too firm for me, but not awful. Overall it was a fine stay, but I wouldn't return, and I definitely wouldn't recommend it for business travelers or anyone sensitive to noise.
