St Nicholas’ Church is an architectural masterpiece and a must-visit in Batumi. Dating from 1865, the church boldly contrasts Batumi’s modern skyline. The cross-domed Orthodox church, located near Piazza Square, was built by the Greek community under Ottoman rule with the proviso that it could not ring bells. Once Turkish rule ended, the church was restored and a bell tower was added.
Inside, it offers a serene experience with religious artifacts, stunning ceiling murals, and beautiful wall paintings. Whether religious or not, visitors will find it fascinating, especially if unfamiliar with Orthodox churches. Women are expected to cover their hair, and scarves are provided at the entrance.
