Top neighborhoods in Kyoto

Gion
Wander through Gion's narrow lanes where wooden machiya houses transport you to old-world Kyoto. Catch glimpses of geiko and maiko hurrying to appointments in elegant kimono along Hanamikoji Street. Yasaka Shrine's vermillion gates and the willow-lined Shirakawa canal create perfect photo backdrops for culture seekers. Temple gardens offer peaceful retreats from the bustling crowds. Exclusive kaiseki restaurants hide behind unassuming wooden facades, requiring reservations weeks ahead. Artisan shops sell handcrafted kimono accessories and traditional fans until early evening. Visit during morning hours to avoid the tourist crush. The neighborhood is best explored on foot, with the Gion-shijo Station connecting you to greater Kyoto.

Central Kyoto
Central Kyoto's historic streets are home to breathtaking UNESCO treasures like Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Nijo Castle. You can immerse yourself in authentic Japanese culture through mesmerizing geisha performances in Gion or peaceful tea ceremonies amid picturesque gardens. Wander through the thousands of vermilion torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine or marvel at the gleaming Kinkaku-ji Golden Pavilion. Traditional ryokans offer tatami floors and cultural immersion while local shops showcase exquisite textiles and ceramics. The neighborhood is best explored on foot or via the convenient metro stations at Imadegawa, Kuramaguchi, or Nijojo-mae. Morning visits help you dodge crowds and soak up temple bell echoes across this living museum of Japanese heritage.

Higashiyama Ward
Traditional-style buildings and protected status define this part of Kyoto, with entertainment in Gion near Yasaka Shrine. Must-see attractions include Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto National Museum, and Namikawa Cloisonne Museum.

Arashiyama
Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty, Arashiyama offers attractions like Iwatayama Monkey Park, Tenryū-ji temple, and Sagano bamboo forest. Easily accessible and walkable, it's perfect for exploring Kyoto's western outskirts.

Kyoto and related destinations
Between ancient temples and modern manga museums, Kyoto reveals itself through contrasts. Wander through vermillion gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine, where thousands of torii create tunnels of orange against green mountainside. Geisha hurry through narrow Gion streets at dusk, their white-painted faces glimpsed briefly before disappearing into exclusive teahouses. The golden pavilion of Kinkaku-ji appears to float on its reflecting pond, somehow more impressive than any photograph suggests. Nishiki Market offers bizarre delicacies and perfect ceramics in equal measure. Don't miss Arashiyama's bamboo grove, where morning light filters through impossibly tall stalks creating a green cathedral effect that explains why the Japanese find spirituality in nature.

Hotel Forza Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi
"Excellent stay overall 5/5! Room was modern and very nice with a TV that was easy to use in English and link stream account."
Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo PREMIER
"All was perfect!! Cleaning to staff"
SOLARIA Nishitetsu Hotel Kyoto Premier
"Everything was amazing!"
THE BLOSSOM KYOTO
"The hotel is in an excellent location. You can walk to amazing restaurants, shops and the local streets are beautiful. It’s really easy to get around from here. I would recommend this hotel to other travelers. However I did not find the reception staff very helpful. I wanted advice on day trips, booking a private car and booking a restaurant and they wouldn’t help me or were very reluctant to help. Booking various things on websites and via phone can be very difficult when you don’t speak Japanese. In addition the rooms are provided with fresh towels each day but the beds are not made. However the beds are very comfortable after a long day out!"
Miyako Hotel Kyoto Hachijo
"Great location, 16 minutes by train to most shrines or a 20-30 minute walk. Across from the Kyoto station. Near some good hole in the wall places with great food (cash only places). There’s a great multi level shopping mall next door. Could’ve used more mirrors, shower did change temperatures while using it, bathroom was small, especially for having the only sink."
APA Hotel Kyoto Eki Horikawadori
"Good, clean rooms and facilities. APA Hotel is always a safe choice for me when solo traveling in Japan and this hotel's location was within walking distance of the Shinkansen, train, and subway station as well as shopping and food. The beds aren't super firm like a lot of hotels and the TVs allow streaming from personal devices or from the hotel's own library of films, shows, and other entertainment. This hotel is located very close to Kyoto Station and right across from the hotel's main entrance is a walking path/shortcut that takes you more directly to the station's Central entrance/exit, several subway entrances, and Kintetsu railway entrance. There is also a 7-Eleven (open 24-hours) right beside this hotel. The laundry room was small, but had 3 washer-dryer units available to guests. The laundry room gets VERY hot, but I didn't have to wait long to be able to use a machine. Keep in mind that most machines don't do an amazing job of drying the clothes, so after running a drying cycle I typically hang up some clothing my room's bathroom and let it dry overnight (the bathroom ventilation does great)."

"Everything is good"
Hotel Granvia Kyoto
"Room was very nice and breakfast was excellent."
Onyado Nono Kyotoshichijo Natural Hot Springs
"This was our favorite hotel of the trip! Great breakfast, amenities, laundry on site, massage chairs for free, the onsen. Amazing! Great location to everything we wanted to do and for transit. If I had to say one bad thing it’s that the pillows needed to be updated. They were hard and small. Otherwise, I would 1000% recommend this Place to anyone visiting Kyoto."
