Lovely small hotel in an absolutely beautiful part of Japan. The service was top-notch and the view from the room unmatched. The natural sulfur onsen was lovely and refreshing. Included dinner is tasty enough, but maybe not for the experienced Japan traveler - it assumes a very low level of knowledge of Japanese culture, so it feels a little bit 'novelty'. The breakfast is buffet-style which is not my favourite. Had a good stay here.

The hotel manager was extremely friendly and so were the other staff. Hotel room was spacious, toilet was nice, Onsen was natural with a weird smell though, and the food that they served was fabulous. Everything was excellent, from caring staff, property condition and food. Please note that there is no lift, but they take your bags up and down (2-4 floors). Free coffee/tea in their cafe/bar. Onsen was also very good. Room was spacious and we were allowed an early check-in. Highly recommended if you are visiting Chuzengi. Take care driving up the winding road during winter.

Best hotel we stayed at in the three weeks we were in Japan! Absolutely delicious breakfast and dinner. Honestly, the dinner was some of the best Japanese food we had all trip. The sunset at the lake was breathtaking. We will be back. Thank you to the wonderful staff!

Comfortable, wonderful Japanese style breakfast and amazing dinner provided. Staff is kind, courteous and helpful for local recommendations. Older accommodations, but very well maintained and very clean. Western beds very comfortable. No elevator but easy access to stairs. Staff will surely help with luggage if needed!

Relax and reset

This is a magical place to stay. After a warm welcome we were guided to our room the onsen is a perfect way to unwind and start your relaxing and renewing stay. If you’re looking for a traditional experience, the dinner will be something you’ll always remember. The breakfast buffet is also a lovely mix of Japanese and western options. All this and a just across the street is the lake. If you want to get away from the hustle, it’s the perfect place to reset after a day of sightseeing.

Good all around hotel choice

A nice hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. The breakfast was a good spread of food and had two times to choose from. I forgot to sign up for dinner which had signups close around 1600, and food is scarce around the area so make sure you have a plan for dinner when staying here. The hotel is very close to the lake, a few shrines and the waterfalls. Overall the location was great. I did not try the onsen the hotel offered but the bathtub in the room was very nice.

This felt like a family-owned inn (not sure if it is) and the staff were absolutely wonderful. We did the included breakfast and dinner, and the dinners were among the best meals we had during our entire 12-day trip in Japan! This is an older hotel, but you are paying for the location -- absolutely gorgeous on Lake Chuzenji! Okunikko is tiny and I'd recommend doing dinner at the hotel since much of the little town closes in the evenings, once the day trippers head out. I would recommend this hotel to people who like an inn/bed and breakfast sort of smaller establishment. It was a bit outdated, but that didn't bother us.

My room was spacious, featuring full-height windows that offered stunning views of Lake Chuzenji. Overall, it was an exceptional experience that I would highly recommend.
