The idea of an urban B&B is compelling. You walk in the door and the first impression is, cool! Unfortunately, the experience goes down from here. There is no host as this experience is self-hosted. Instead of being greeted with a selection of meat and cheeses or vegetables and humus, one is greeted by a display of Utz chips. Ok, no problem if you brought your own wine (I did) and snacks (I did not). The ambiance carried until one goes upstairs. Imagine the anticipation, expecting that the big surprise be on the second floor. Not so. The second floor kitchen was not only poorly equipped, but also a bit dingy. I was surprised to find a drying towel in the kitchen that was far from fresh and clean. Breakfast is a self-conducted affair during the week. Imagine our dismay that the continental breakfast consisted of a couple of bagels, two bananas, a half a carton of eggs, some yoghurt, a bit of half-and-half for coffee, and a selection of undated spices. This would be a killer selection with a small adjustment to attention to detail. Entrance is everything. Follow that up t(hey know when we are coming as this is a singel rservation gig) with an appetizer selections that sets one up to head up one or two blocks to a great section of restaurants, and we might not get upstairs until after the aperitif. Once upstairs, a clean and equipped kitchen would be a treat, as would individually wrapped soaps and hair products. This is not about value; it is about excellence. Excellence is with reach, if the owners reach just a bit farther. You have the potential to be expceptional; seize it.
