We arrived to the Red Elephant to a parking area which was not cleared of snow enough to fit our vehicle. The stairs and entry way were also not cleared of snow and the stairs were packed solid with snow/ice making it rather treacherous to navigate with luggage. Our room had a broken and non-functional doorknob that was literally falling out of the door, the only way to close the door was via the deadbolt. The room had a large sticky spill right in front of the bed which we were immediately stepping in. There was food and trash throughout the room though it appeared the bed had been made with fresh linens. The smoke detector had been removed and there were wires dangling from the ceiling where it was supposed to be, we soon after found the smoke detector just sitting on a shelf in the bathroom. The toilet was full of urine because it was broken and wouldn't flush. A gentleman came up and "fixed" it but it ultimately broke again after a few flushes. We again reported the issue and it appeared to be fixed by the time we returned later that day.
It really seems like the owners of this establishment just don't care. They don't clear the snow from their entry way which pretty much says they don't care about the safety of their guests. Our room was dingy and unclean, in fact I bet there is still trash underneath the bed. The bathroom was grimy and dirty. I understand it's an old building but that doesn't excuse the uncleanliness or disrepair.
