Hotel Sonne is a comfortable hotel right in the center of Lienz, a quick walk from the train and bus stations. The interior of the building itself is definitely dated and a bit austere, but that really didn’t impact my stay. My room was comfortable and had a fantastic view of the mountains. The breakfast options were great, and I appreciated that breakfast itself started at 6:00 (I’m an early riser). The staff were friendly and accommodating. I was there for 5 days for a conference. The hotel was just what i looked for - affordable price, good location in the town (about halfway up the western slope), quiet and clean and with friendly and helpful staff.
The suite contained separate bedroom, kitchen/living area w fireplace, bathroom w sauna, and water closet. The living and bedrooms each had a bay window overlooking the town of Matrei in Osttirol, charming is an understatement. The restaurant served probably one of the best steaks I ever had in Europe and the staff were all very friendly and helpful to us American travelers. Our only regret was not staying more than one night.
Room was great and the cleaning staff were wonderful. Be aware that this is not the mother property and in order to check in and check out, you have to go to a different hotel down the street. There is almost no front desk staff at this location ever. The breakfast (in the mother hotel) is wonderful!
