Asama Onsen
Asama Onsen wraps you in 1,300 years of hot spring tradition just a quick trip from Matsumoto. Steam rises from mineral-rich waters while historic ryokans with curved tile roofs nestle among forested hills. Traditional bathhouses like Asama Onsen Kaikan offer authentic soaking experiences, and walking paths wind through otherworldly steam vents near the cultural landmark of Asama Shrine. Traditional kaiseki dining features seasonal mountain vegetables and river fish, primarily at ryokans where meals come with your stay. Most visitors arrive by car as public transit is limited, but the compact resort area is pleasant for walking despite some steep terrain. The peaceful atmosphere focuses on relaxation rather than nightlife, perfect for wellness seekers.

Iroha Grand Hotel
"Small room but perfectly adequate for 2 nights."
Hotel Matsumoto Yorozuya
"This is a quality hotel. It is more utilitarian. It is not a high end hotel but it doesn’t pretend to be."
aduminoyu onyado nonomatsumoto
"The staff were extremely friendly, the onsen is clean and the hotel is generous to his guest"
THE CELECTON Matsumoto
"Propre! Chambre tres petite mais malgré tout confortable!"
Nunoya Ryokan
"Very charming ryokan! Stayed with our older children and wished we had more time here. The staff were above and beyond helpful when my teenager left a number of items behind - thank you! The lounge was a nice space to relax in and enjoy the complimentary tea/coffee in the morning and evening. Located on a picturesque street, with a lot of food/shopping nearby and it was an easy walk from the train station. The property is very clear about the age of the building etc - so watch out if you have difficulty with stairs."
Dormy Inn Matsumoto Natural Hot Spring
"Late night ramen was delicious! Breakfast didn’t have very many options for the cost of it. Public bathing room and sauna were well kept and beautiful. They also offer free popsicles for afterwards."
YUTORIA RESORT HIDATAKAYAMA
"Rooms get spacious, lots of amenities. Location was great for proximity to market etc."
Yumotoya
"The staff were incredibly helpful. The room was spacious and luxurious and the onsens were wonderful. Tucked away from the main downtown area which I appreciated."
