Learn more about Spruce Pine
Tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains, this small town sits atop one of the world's few deposits of high-purity quartz. Try your hand at gem mining at Emerald Village, where amateurs regularly unearth sparkling treasures. The Museum of North Carolina Minerals offers fascinating context for all that glitters in these ancient hills. Hiking enthusiasts can tackle nearby Table Rock and Hawksbill Mountain trails for views that explain why locals never leave. The Orchard at Altapass combines apple picking with Appalachian music and storytelling. After a day exploring Pisgah National Forest, chat with woodworkers at Woody's Chair Shop, where traditional craftsmanship continues without fanfare. Visit in May for the NC Mineral and Gem Festival when the town's mining heritage takes center stage.

The Inn at Shady Lawn
"It was perfect for what we needed."
Super 8 by Wyndham Black Mountain/Asheville East
"Nice staff. Pet friendly. Fairly quiet."
The Highlands at Sugar
"Unit did not have A/C but it was comfortable during the evening hours. I would update the television in the bedroom."
Switzerland Inn
"We stayed there for our 55th wedding anniversary in mid-August. The staff was excellent. The beds were very firm and so were the pillows. I wish I would have brought my own bed pillow. The room was huge! We ate at the Chalet restaurant for breakfast one morning. It was really good. Then we had reservations for dinner on our anniversary. My filet was cooked perfectly and the mushrooms were excellent. My husband was disappointed in his prime rib because it was overcooked and dry. The service in the restaurant was kind of slow because they don't have enough help. It took three tries for them to get my husband's cocktail correct. Our server, Sheila, was very sweet and apologetic. The first afternoon we were there we went out to the terrace bar and they were closing early because of not enough help. There were very many disappointed people. Our room was on the second floor. I wish we would have known beforehand so that we could have made sure our room was on the first floor because we both have breathing issues. The 23 steps up to the second floor was very difficult for our breathing. The staff was accommodating and carried up our heavy suitcase. One of the best things about this place was the absolute beautiful view of the mountains."
Hampton Inn Marion
"Room was clean. We had to ask for bedding for the pull out bed - I expected it to be in the closet. Kids swam in the pool. The pool room was super hot! Looks like there was duct work in the ceiling but removed. Unsure if they are working on it or not. Breakfast was great!"
Bluegreen Vacations Blue Ridge Village, an Ascend Collection Resort
"This was an amazing place to stay! I didn’t realize I had a 1-bedroom unit and that was awesome. They have 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom units with a fireplace! Full kitchen, clean, quiet, and location was perfect in Banner Elk. My new go-to mountain retreat-away-from home!"
Springmaid Mountain
"Everything was clean and ready for us. Was a cold week but still nice and warm with the gas logs. Kitchen was supplied with utensils and cooking equipment. Enjoyed our stay. We will be back. "
