Top neighborhoods in San Rafael

Downtown San Rafael
Downtown San Rafael mixes California history and modern fun in a walkable package. The Mission San Rafael Arcángel anchors the historic district, where Victorian buildings line Fourth Street. Catch an indie film at the Rafael Film Center or browse the galleries at Art Works Downtown. Thursday nights come alive with a buzzing farmers market that fills streets with music and local flavors. You'll find everything from farm-to-table restaurants to authentic taquerias reflecting the area's Latino influence. Most shops and eateries cluster along Fourth Street, making exploration easy on foot. Golden Gate Transit buses connect downtown to San Francisco, while nearby parking lots accommodate drivers venturing into this charming Marin County hub.

Gerstle Park
Gerstle Park offers a quiet retreat where Victorian and Craftsman homes create an outdoor architectural museum. The historic neighborhood's tree-lined streets invite leisurely strolls past ornate woodwork, colorful paint schemes, and charming front porches. Its namesake park features heritage trees and peaceful walking paths that provide a welcome escape from urban bustle. Downtown San Rafael's restaurants and shops are just a 10-minute walk away. Accommodations are limited to a few historic bed & breakfasts with period furnishings and personalized service. The neighborhood's authentic local vibe makes it perfect for travelers who appreciate architectural beauty and tranquil surroundings.

Montecito-Happy Valley
Montecito-Happy Valley offers a peaceful retreat from San Rafael's busier areas, with tree-lined streets and spacious properties creating a serene atmosphere. While the neighborhood itself has no commercial attractions, you're just minutes from Mission San Rafael Arcangel and Marin History Museum. China Camp State Park provides nearby hiking trails with stunning bay views for nature enthusiasts. Getting around requires a car since public transit is limited, though the quiet streets make for pleasant walks. Accommodations tend toward luxury vacation rentals with private gardens and premium amenities. For dining and shopping, you'll need to venture into downtown San Rafael, where diverse options await.
Civic Center
San Rafael's Civic Center neighborhood has a host of places to visit such as Marin County Civic Center and Marin County Civic Center Farmers' Market.

Learn more about San Rafael
Fourth Street buzzes with life as the heart of downtown, where locals debate which farm-to-table restaurant deserves their loyalty this week. Mission San Rafael Arcángel offers a peaceful glimpse into California's Spanish colonial past, while the futuristic curves of the Marin County Civic Center showcase Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural genius. China Camp State Park rewards hikers with Bay views that explain why residents tolerate the cost of living here. The weekly farmers' market transforms into an impromptu community gathering, with musicians performing between stalls of organic produce. Don't miss the annual Italian Street Painting Festival, when Fourth Street becomes a temporary gallery of chalk masterpieces that wash away with the first rain.

Hilton San Francisco Union Square
"It was great!"
Handlery Union Square Hotel
"Very clean hotel with a great location right near Union Square. The good: Clean, location, friendly staff. The bad: Parking fee is expensive (use the parking garage less than a block away instead), some of the rooms are pretty small, the pool is small, and the sauna requires a reservation. The meh: rooms are "outdated" (I liked it, but some people prefer more modern fixtures), and there seems to be quirky rules for accessing certain amenities (see sauna above). Overall: If its reasonably priced compared to other hotels nearby, I think this one is a safe bet."
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Berkeley Marina
"We love this property. The view of the Bay is amazing and the kids love the indoor pool."
Hotel Nikko San Francisco
"My partner and I enjoyed our stay at Hotel Nikko. Overall, it was a 4-4.5/5 star experience. The property was well maintained and the rooms were overall quite nice. The 1st floor japanese restaurant was nice- we enjoyed the small plates they offered. The hotel lobby on the first floor was nice as well. The 5th floor sauna, workout room and pool/spa area are definite highlights! A few things: the elevators can be a bit confusing to use at first (the card tapping function on the call button is unintuitive), and they can be a bit of a lengthy wait. Also, they charge a $39 daily amenity fee (tax plus fees brings it to $45/day)- so be advised this is not a budget friendly hotel by any means. In all, this was a nice place to stay in downtown SF. Would stay here again in the future should other options prover costlier."
FOUND Hotel Carlton, Nob Hill
"The room was clean and had what was needed, but it got pretty warm in the room and there was some hair in the shower when we had arrived. There was only the ceiling fan but no ac unfortunately. The staff were very helpful and nice to talk to! Good breakfast places within the area and a couple liquor/grocery stores within a 5 minute walking distance. my biggest complaint was the parking options around the hotel which there was only one option that had overnight fees of 75-80$."
Hotel Zoe Fisherman's Wharf
"Perfect walking location to pier 39 and my family really enjoyed the complimentary s’mores"
Hyatt Regency San Francisco
"This property is amazing. You get what you pay for $$$. The wait for valet was excessive."
Club Quarters Hotel in San Francisco
"A friendly and convenient property at the edge of the financial district and walking distance to Cable Car, BART, Ferry Bldg and Muni routes. The common dining room has complimentary tea and coffee service all day. In each floor there are refillable water bottles with filtered water and amenities like razors and toothpaste Ina self serve honor system."
Fairmont San Francisco
"Great location. Room was decent sized."
