My son (7) and I decided to head to GALA for his birthday weekend and I wanted him to have a Japanese ryokan experience. Simply put, he LOVED the place. In fact, he wanted to move to Japan after staying here. Overall, it was an excellent place to stay and the staff were absolutely wonderful. One night, with no taxi and tempreatures near freezing, one of the mangers offered to drop us off to a near by ramen place even though they had suspended rides for the day. Now that's service! This resort was significant to how amazing our snowboarding vacation turned out. Breakfast and dinner buffet was delicious! It’s true they don’t change items but there were so many choices that it really wasn’t necessary. We looked forward to breakfast and dinners there the entire 4 night stay. We had the junior suite which has the stone tub as our bath and it was a dream come true. Japanese style futons were so comfortable even after a long day of snowboarding. The best thing about the hotel is the Onsen! The price was also reasonable. The hotel is a little on the worn side but still in good shape. It does have a shuttle to/from the echigo-yuzawa station but their hours are limited. The last pickup is 5:30pm if you miss that you will need to hire a taxi (expensive), take a bus (also limited hours) , take the local train to the iwapara station and then a 4 min walk to the hotel (the train is about 1 per hour) or you can walk to the hotel (about 45min)
