Aynetree Guest House

"Our room was on the ground floor which was convenient, but the bathroom was down a hallway which I didn't like. The room was very comfortable, as were the beds. We liked the coffee station but wished the hotel had served breakfast. There's no food served there and not many restaurant options in easy walking distance. It's also further out of downtown than expected although there are bus lines and plenty of parking nearby if you have a car. There is no staff on site all the time, but when we needed them, they were very responsive."

"Generally the stay was good but unfortunately the very positive policy of the hotel towards dogs significantly impacted on my enjoyment of the visit. In particular the number of dogs in the dining areas at both dinner and breakfast times was unattractive."
Peebles Hydro Hotel

"My second visit to Peebles Hydro. Lovely grounds surrounding Hydro. It is comfortable and clean. Staff all pleasant and helpful. Good breakfast, but make sure you go early as things were running out. Altogether a lovely stay. Will be back. Thanks."

"Initially was assigned a very small room in the eaves, not the “classic double” as advertised. Staff were very helpful and allowed me to upgrade for a reasonable price. Breakfast was excellent and the restaurant menu very good, with excellent service throughout. The house itself is impressive but rooms and common areas are frankly knackered. Greasy marks around switches, peeling, chipped wallpaper and broken furniture throughout. I paid to upgrade to the “royal suite”, in order to get a desk and mirror, but it was just a very large room, not a suite, and with none of the expected facilities you would get with a suite (fridge, minibar, writing materials etc). Grounds are brilliant however and the shortcomings of the building were made up by the excellent food and high standard of customer service."

"We had a pleasant stay. The room was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed for a short visit. It's a simple, no-frills place with basic amenities. Sound proofinf isn't that fantastic. We had some inconsiderate neighbours. The breakfast was good, with a nice selection to start the day. Continental buffet breakfast set up with cooked english breakfast available on demand. The location is a little further out from the city centre if you plan to walk. That said, outside the front is a bus stop for the No.44 bus, which was convenient. Ample reasonable paid parking for guests. A disappointment was that the restaurant is only opened for breakfast and not dinner. There are limited choice of restaurants nearby. You will need to get into the city, nearby Portobello or Duddingston. The bar operating hours also varies. It is generally not opened at night. There is also no coming lounge area to sit and have a chat. One thing worth noting for international travellers is that air conditioning isn't a standard amenity in many UK hotels, so it's always worth checking before you book if that's important to you. A fan would have been appreciated during the warmer weather. Also, don't assume there will be a bar fridge in the room, as refrigerators are not commonly provided either. Overall, if you're looking for a clean, comfortable, and affordable place to stay without the extras, this is a solid choice."
