Top neighborhoods in Almaty

Almaly District
Almaly District delivers Almaty's greatest hits with surprising ease. The golden domes of Zenkov Cathedral rise above leafy Panfilov Park, while the aromatic Green Bazaar beckons with spices and local textiles. Culture vultures can hop between theaters and museums, then cool off with locals under the shade of towering poplars. Soviet monuments stand tall alongside modern venues where traditional Kazakh tunes fill the air. The dining scene ranges from beshbarmak in traditional spots to cappuccinos in trendy cafes. Most attractions sit within easy walking distance along wide, tree-lined boulevards. The metro and bus system connects everything smoothly, making this central neighborhood perfect for travelers who want authentic cultural experiences without sacrificing convenience.

Medeu District
Medeu District delivers mountain magic without the fuss. The legendary ice rink sits in a dramatic mountain amphitheater while cable cars whisk you to Shymbulak ski resort through fragrant pine forests. Hiking trails wind past rushing streams with panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Whether skating in winter or mountain biking in summer, outdoor adventures await year-round. Most visitors rely on taxis to navigate this alpine playground since public transit is limited. Mountain hotels and cozy lodges offer spectacular views, while restaurants serve hearty Kazakh cuisine after a day on the slopes. The crisp mountain air and peaceful setting make Medeu a refreshing escape from downtown Almaty.

Bostandyk District
Bostandyk District balances city buzz with peaceful green retreats. Spend mornings exploring the towering Almaty Tower or wandering through the botanical gardens with their colorful displays of Kazakhstan's native plants. Central Park offers tree-lined paths perfect for people-watching, while Republic Square shows off the city's grand civic architecture. Local cafes serve traditional Kazakh dishes like beshbarmak alongside international options throughout the district. Well-connected by city buses and readily available taxis, you can easily venture downtown or retreat to the quieter residential areas where apartment rentals offer a more authentic stay.

Turksib District
Named after the Turkestan-Siberian Railway, Turksib District offers an authentic slice of everyday Kazakh life away from Almaty's tourist centers. The wide, tree-lined streets showcase Soviet-era architecture mixed with newer residential buildings. Small neighborhood parks dot the landscape, providing peaceful spots to watch local life unfold at its natural pace. Budget travelers will appreciate the affordable family-run guesthouses and homestays that cost less than central Almaty options. Traditional Kazakh dishes like beshbarmak and plov can be enjoyed at small neighborhood cafés that close early. Public buses connect to downtown every 20-30 minutes, making city attractions accessible despite the district's residential character.
Jetysu District
Almaty's Jetysu District neighborhood offers attractions including Barakholka Market.

Radisson Blu Hotel, Almaty Airport
"Such a brilliant hotel, with stellar rooms, great food, super friendly staff and a good location. It's close to the airport obviously but downtown is about 15 mins away. Good value too."
Mildom Residence
"First floor stay is not recommended, windows blocked, restaurant traffic noise"
Hotel Tahar
"Firstly I LOVE the concept of this hotel giving you 24h from check-in to check out. It's super helpful if you arrive on a late flight, which is normal in Almaty I believe. The staff was helpful and the property was very clean with a convenient location. However, for hot summer days, keep in mind there is NO AC! I don't think this is usually a problem in Almaty as it gets cold in winter, but my top-floor single room was ROASTING on a 35C August day and I hardly slept at all :( They eventually gave me a fan, but yeah it was very uncomfortable and I left early. I think this heat was a rarity however so just check the weather before you come here."
Naya Hotel
"I really enjoyed my stay at Naya Hotel. The room was clean and comfortable, the staff were friendly, and the location was great. Everything was smooth and pleasant. I would definitely stay here again!"
Hostel O2
"The standards have declined noticeably since I first visited this hostel many years ago. It's in a great location near the bus station and park so it is always busy, mostly with tourists from China, but the standards have gone down too much.Firstly, the bean bags in the common area smell very bad and likely haven't been washed in a long time if at all. After midnight you find Chinese guests sleeping on them all night...and the mens bathrooms are really bad. The soap in the toilets disappears from Chinese tourists that remove it to shower with and the toilets themselves are always dirty, once again due to the toilet habits of the Chinese tourists. There are no hangars available which is simple to solve and the staff conduct a room check at 09-10am when check-out is at 12? The general common area is still bright and spacious and the WiFi is decent. There is also free drinking water and complimentary towels, slippers and soap. Laundry is a very reasonable 500 too, though once again without clean bathroom facilities, this location has lost its appeal for me."
Uyut Hotel
"Decent breakfast There was a mix up with Expedia. We had to Pay for Two Rooms vs one. Not staffs fault Clean Safe Nice breakfast and gym"
Almaty Hotel
"Centrally located and all-around terrific, the Almaty Hotel was a great place to stay. The lobby is a bit underwhelming, but the room was very nice—clean, spacious, and comfy—and the breakfast bar (which even has a whole outdoor seating area) was absolutely stellar. Very nice hotel for a first-time-to-Almaty stay."
Park Dedeman Almaty
"Great location to explore Botanic Garden on foot and city easily assessible with Yangex Go (UBER). The roof top terrace is a beautiful location to enjoy a cocktail or traditional pot of tea with stunning views! The meals and breakfast all good. Staff really helpful and friendly. Throughly enjoyed my stay. When I return to Almaty, I will stay again 😊"
Grand Mildom Hotel
"I am writing to share my feedback following I am writing to share my feedback following my stay at Meldom hotel from July 26th through August 7th. Throughout my two-week stay, I was deeply impressed by the high standard of service provided by the reception staff. Every team member was courteous, professional, and attentive to every detail. My room was consistently spotlessly clean, quiet, and very comfortable. I would like to extend a special note of gratitude to the hotel manager, for his for his exceptional coordination, and to the front desk team for their warm hospitality. Thank you for making my stay so pleasant and memorable—I look forward to returning Warm regards Ziba 8/10/26"
