Hotel first: Basiiani Hotel is a marvel in a town once called the 'Shame of Italy'. It is a hotel that is comprised of several rooms carved into caves that used to be people's homes. It is awesome. The decor, beds, bathroom and amenities all top notch. The staff friendly and the buffet breakfast was great. Highly recommended. Now the town of Matera.... you must go. Truly out of this world and worth every adjective of beauty.

We had an amazing stay at the Cenobio Hotel! It can be a bit tricky to find if it's your first time in Matera, and you can't drive directly to the hotel. My daughter and I stayed here in the middle of a 2 week trip through Italy. A perfect respite from the trains, planes and cars. We had Spa massages and spent some time in the Lagoon. Lagoon, maybe overrated, but the massage was the best I've had in my 56 years! A bit of moist mold on one of the walls in the room needed to be pointed out to the staff. I'm sure it was fixed immediately. Probably happened because someone spent hours in the incredible shower with room for at least 4 people. Pleasure...
