Retreat was very relaxing. The room we stayed in felt private, there is a nice lounge area outback with a hammock and comfy chairs. The hot tub was nice after a cold day kayaking. Jen was super friendly and helpful offering advice on restaurants in the area. The location is about 10min from downtown Kaikoura but exactly what we wanted in something away from the busy tourist area. Would 100% recommend this to others, great value.

Kaikoura was one of the most memorable stops on our New Zealand trip. The snow capped mountains over the sea are absolutely stunning. The staff at Kaikoura Beach motel were so friendly and communicative. We were traveling by train without a car so we opted to rent their bicycles to explore the coastline and the seal colony. The motel unit is spacious! There are two bedrooms with queen bed in both. Kitchen is fully equipped even with dishwasher (after staying in 10 different motels/rental houses, this is the only one with dishwasher). The kids playground is so much fun, we had very bad weather during our stay there luckily there is the playground with some sort of digital interactive kunfu game or something.
