This is my 16th trip to Germany. The Torfhaus Resort rates as one of the best experiences that I have ever had. The location is perfect for hiking, biking, sightseeing or just relaxing. It is in the forest, but close to Altenau, Braunlage and other larger communities. The cottages are in excellent shape with the most modern appliances. Staff is very professional and always on duty. First off: The staff was phenomenal! From the front desk, to the restaurant (thanks for preparing my complimentary Tiramisu at 10:45pm!), to the cleaning crew, they were all amazing.
The hotel has the best location given that is is right on the Markplatz. Easy walk to explore the town. Added bonus is the parking onsite for 10 Euros a day.
The room was bigger than I needed it to be, since it was over two stories. But it was very clean and pretty modern. Very comfortable bedding.

Clean, spacious room with amazing view up the street and Werningerode Schloss so very close upon the hill. V good breakfast and a lovely small sauna you can reserve a time for private use. We appreciated a break from the larger city hotels in Hamburg and Berlin to stay in a small cozy bnb style environment. You can step right out the door to shopping and food. The staff was v sweet and we wished we had more time here. Highly recommend!
Our room was huge, way bigger than we needed. Check in was a bit difficult. At first the code she gave me to get my key didn't work and then she didn't explain that I needed to go to the room on the side of the building. There is a deep tub but no Sauna even though they advertise one as an amenity so that was disappointing but they're doing construction behind the building so that could be why. The parking lot was full when we arrived which was a pain but the street parking is free.
