St Peter's Church - the south side, near to Upwell, Norfolk, Great Britain. St Peter's church > <a title="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1241017" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1241017">Link</a><img style="padding-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="http://s0.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/> - surrounded by a vast churchyard - is located beside the old course of the River Nene. The church dates from the 14th century but its interior > <a title="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1822523" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1822523">Link</a><img style="padding-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="http://s0.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/> is mainly 19th century. There are several noteworthy medieval survivals such as a truly magnificent hammerbeam roof with carved decorations > <a title="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1822557" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1822557">Link</a><img style="padding-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="http://s0.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/> and angels, a number of brasses > <a title="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1822517" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1822517">Link</a><img style="padding-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="http://s0.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/> and the baptismal font > <a title="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1822560" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1822560">Link</a><img style="padding-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="http://s0.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/>. The church tower has an octagonal top. The village of Upwell - once the southern terminus of the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway - is located on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens. It is traversed by Well Creek, the old course of the River Nene. Draining of the fens and their conversion into fertile agricultural land started in 1630 when the Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden was employed by a group led by the Earl of Bedford. Despite all efforts, nature contrived to ensure that the drainage work should continue as the dry peat shrunk and further lowered the level of the land. Upwell merges with the adjoining village of Outwell, situated on the A1122 close to the Cambridgeshire border about 5 miles south of Wisbech. <a title="http://www.upwellpc.co.uk/index.php" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.upwellpc.co.uk/index.php">Link</a><img style="padding-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="http://s0.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/>
