The church tower has an octagonal top. The village of Upwell - once the southern terminus of the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway - is located on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens. It is traversed by Well Creek, the old course of the River Nene. Draining of the fens and their conversion into fertile agricultural land started in 1630 when the Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden was employed by a group led by the Earl of Bedford. Despite all efforts, nature contrived to ensure that the drainage work should continue as the dry peat shrunk and further lowered the level of the land. "This was a group booking for nine people. There were no problems with any of the rooms, which were very clean and well maintained. We arrived early and were told there would be no problem parking in the free car park and storing bags in the store room until check-in time. My friend was also able to charge his electric car in the car park. Check-in itself was very easy. We added breakfast on after not including it in the booking originall. Breakfast was really good, with lots of choice, plenty of places to sit and everything immaculately presented. Would definitely return here again. Really good value and great location."
