With a great location, close to town and on the water, this hotel should be a no-brainer. I was dissappointed with the service and the condition of our room. We were unable to check in early, though I reserved a king bed room, we ended up with two full beds right next to the elevator...thin walls. Fantastic resort with everything you need and very close to heaps of great places to eat, relax and watch the world go by love the whale and dolphin watching at breakfast in the bistro.

The hotel was in one of the best locations ever. It was in easy walking distance of all of the shops and restaurants in town so we didn't have to use our car except for day trips. A big plus. I booked an oceanview room and had a view of the ocean and the dilapidated, in much need of repair roof of Don the Beachcomer, very disappointing and distracting […] from the view. Big parts of the roof missing and exposed wiring and mechanical things. The overall staff was very good except in the large lounge area. We were met with either indifference or downright rudeness so we took our business elsewhere for our 5 days and nights in Kailua. Our one and only drink in the hotel was a day when a rain squall came in and everyone dashed for the covered area. We had our check and wanted to pay. When we asked the bartender if he could take care of the bill for us, he said "I'm a bartender, not a server". Hmmmm. Our server wasn't much better. Not a smile or kind word among them and very slow service. We felt like we were unwanted guests in their home so we left. I gave it one more try with 3 chatting bartenders/servers and got ignored even though there was no one else there. I should have waited until they finished their conversation but as the minutes ticked by, I left. The lagoon area was fabulous and we had a very nice afternoon there. The pool was surprisingly small for a hotel of this size and there is no food or beverage service. The biggest red flag at this hotel is security. Your next door neighbors on either side can actually step over a small wall and onto your lanai, into your room! There is zero privacy from your next door neighbors so you have to leave your window coverings completely closed and dark with your door locked (that's another story) while showering, dressing or lying in bed. They can look over into your room from the rooms on both sides with a full view of everything in your room. For our second visit to Kona, HI we chose this hotel because it is closer to the center. The facilities are ok for a week's stay. We booked "ocean view" and were put in a room were we were overlooking the dull rooftop of the restaurant, not very exciting. Stayed a single saturday night..note extra $10 night for parking and extra charge $10 for internet. For how much they charge parking should at least be included. Stayed in Bayview tower, beds were old/soft uncomfortable. Very noisy, sound carries through walls. Cheesy 19" TV, no flat screens here! Not enough front desk help, no one answers front desk […] phones.. Tower we stayed had empty shops and was run down. Luau was good. Probably get a more "fair" deal at Uncle Billy's! Leer más

Except for a plumbing problem with the bathtub, which was fixed promptly, it was a pleasant room with a view of the ocean.

Room we were in had faint mildew odor; otherwise it was a good place to stay. Perhaps we should have asked to be moved to another room, since our friends' room next door did not have an unpleasant smell. Very nice staff at reception.

Location, location , location! This hotel sits right on the edge of the ocean! What beautiful sunset views from our room. The hotel is a bit dated, however that should not stop you from staying here. Nice place. Great view of the ocean. Smallish pool. No beach. However, it was convenient to both north and south beaches around Kona. 2 hour drive to Hilo or to Volcano National Park. Easy walk to many nice affordable restaurants. Very helpful staff.

The hotel was on a cliff and we chose an oceanfront room which had a beautiful view. While not in the newest part of the hotel, the rooms were clean and nice. The mattresses were a bit saggy. Hotel staff was friendly and the location was super. There were restaurants and shops within walking distance. A minor deficit was that there was no hot tub.

Hotel accomodations were quite satisfactory and the bar is beautifully situated for sunset watching. Don the Beachcomber's Tiki Lounge Restaurant is the pits, however. Dinner menu very ordinary and food only mediocre; service was way below average. When we arrived 10 minutes late for breakfast due to a misunderstanding of the closing time, we were advised […] that even though food was still out on the buffet, we couldn't be seated because all the salt and pepper had been picked up! Hotel was great. Well inside the central part of Kona and close to the dive center where I was going to do most of my activities while there. Only complaint? How close it was to the Traditional Hawaiian show that took place every evening and which was rather noisy! Apart from that, great value for the money!

We thouroughly enjoyed our stay at the Royal Kona Resort. Althought the hotel is a little dated, the service was amazing, the room was very clean and the ocean view was beautiful ! It is located close to many ammenities and within walking distance of a fun and active night life along the ocean.

Great location for shops, restaurants around Kona. Accomodation a little dated but good rates.

Overall we had a decent stay. When we arrived the room was not ready. The staff was very accommodating though and because of its excellent location we were able to have a meal and walk around a little while we waited. Once we finally did get our room it was in the Alika tower. Great view of pool and ocean and large balcony. Do to the age of the property, […] it did not have great sound proofing. At normal talking tone we could fully hear the cell phone conversations of our neighbors when on their balcony, and the opening and shutting of glass or hall doors. The gym if you can call it that is less than acceptable. You will want to go to Pacific Island Fitness if you need a workout. Parking was easy, though the spots are super skinny. Food was very good and the Luau done at the hotel is one of the best on the island. Have some patience when using pool bar... they are slow for drink or food service. Location was ideal, next to hot spot "Huggo's" and you could walk to most anything downtown. Leer más

You can't beat the location if you want to be in the heart of Kona The Hotel is showing its age, however renovations are slowly taking place. This hotel is still a good value for the price

I had an amazing stay at this hotel. From walking around and talking to other visitors I think this was the best place to stay. Amazing views and grounds for a great price. I did not enjoy the Luau the hotel had on its grounds. They made you wait 1 1/2 hours after arriving and smelling the food to eat, then it was already cold. They had a huge bowl […] of Mai Tai that everyone served themselves from and seemed unsanitary and no one was checking ID's. I loved the hotel and would stay there again for sure!! Leer más

We spent 4 days here Dec 2011. The location is decent - lots of interesting shops and restaurants. As far a location goes - you cannot go wrong - Kailua is a great place to get you to interesting locations.... The Bar area by the ocean is fantastic. We didn't attend the luau but it seemed popular. The lagoon area has fish and apparently turtles sometimes. Negatives: […] Rooms feel like a motel room. They do worse than a motel by not even providing the daily bag of morning coffee. We spent time at the nearby Sheraton and were regretting not opting for it (but note that the Sheraton and other resorts are self-contained) but were at the same time happy to be close to the shops and restaurants. If I had to visit again, I'd pay a bit more for the Sheraton. Leer más

The economy has really affected Kona and the Royal Kona resort. The amenities were lacking to say the least. The restaurant was a joke! The breakfast buffet was minimal at best! I have stayed at this hotel many times over the pat 20 years and it is at it's worst..

Just a great location and a nice hotel with good service and parking. No interner or breakfast included in the price but overall a good deal close to the nice Alii drive "downtown" area.

We loved the views and the location of out the Royal Kona. The room needed renovation. It is old and dingy and the bathroom was not good. The price was reasonable and the pool was nice. It was never too crowded.

This hotel has great location. The rooms are good but the bathrooms are old and worn. Flimsy shower curtain so the floors got wet. It didn't look clean also.

We were pleasently surprised to see what the hotel is now. We have been to Kona for years, and would stay there for a night or so, and it was an Ok hotel, dated and not very appealing!111 Now it is wonderful!! We got a very lovely oceanfront room for a great deal (2 night with 3rd night free). Pros: View was stunning, hotel was quiet, room comfortable and clean. We loved the little swimming lagoon and did not use the pool. Grounds were lovely. We really liked being able to walk into downtown Kailua Kona whenever we liked. We had a car and the self parking […] was convenient, close, and only $10 a day with unlimited in/out access. All staff was a pleasure to work with. They sent complimentary champagne to our room (when we upgraded from Ocean View to Ocean Front). Things that other travelers would probably like to know: The hotel is older and you have to be ready for a late-sixites/early-seventies style decor. The towers have open courtyards (which are very pretty and great for fresh air!) but that means you can see the wear on hall carpets, stairs, etc. Because this is the rocky Kona coast, the oceanfront is gorgeous but there is not a large sand beach on site (but there are many nearby and a cute swimming lagoon on site!) The first day, I think the bellman accidentally forgot us and we just ended up carrying our own bags (we were just two and there were some larger groups checking in at the same time). The bar is lovely though prices seemed a little high considering other options in town. We did not eat at the restaurant or visit the luau. So overall, there are a couple things that might cause others might "ding" the hotel's score down. However, we loved it here and would definitely come back. Old hotel, very noisy at any side of resort, parking is atrocious, and service is poor!

We have stayed at the RKR before and enjoyed the newly re-decorated rooms. Steps to restaurants, shops, entertainment. Oceanside bar with a great view of the Pacific and sunsets.

We had a great stay, friendly people and the recent upgrades are an improvement to this older building. Make sure to get a recently renovated room please. The GOOD: As for the people, price, and location, perfect! You are right on the beach, right in the middle to end of what's happening in Kona. You don't need a car here, you can walk the beach road […] easily, bike, or rent a moped 1/2 block away for cheap. 1 Restaurant and 1 Fabulous Bar downstairs are top notch (ask for bartender Cary for local tips!), best views, don't actually need to leave location. The Bad: Expect to pay $10 per day for parking, no hot tub. Some rooms have not been renovated, stay away, or pay 50% less, or go to a motel down the road. Not to kid friendly. Leer más

Good location. Views were good. Problem being the hotel air conditioning needed servicing as it was very noisy. Reported this to room service, but nothing was done as promised to fix the problem.

We were in Kona for my son's football game and decided to book the night before. This was our third visit to the Royal Kona Resort and we had no problem as usual. It's comfortable, clean, and basic. The staff was friendly and provided me with extra room towels right away.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The staff was very helpful and nice. The location is perfect, there are a lot of great restaurants, bars and shops very close by. The not-so-great was our room. There were a lot of simple fixes needing attention, for example: the hotel phone's features did not work; the interactive TV features; the grip tape in the bath […] tub half peeled up (kinda gross); the toilet not wanting to flush (really gross). The bed was really uncomfortable. In contrast, the common areas were exceptional. The pool was much nicer than portrayed in the photos. The breezeway lounge has fantastic, soft, cushy chairs which are great for relaxing, watching the jet skis or dolphins jumping in the water. I actually fell asleep in one of those chairs it was so comfortable. The Mai Tai Bar is just as great for watching the seas if you want more action. The bar staff is friendly and even though we had the problems with our room, we were able to contact someone quickly and the response was even faster. The maintenance didn’t always have a fix (like the interactive TV features for wireless internet access) but they always had a solution. Leer más

We stayed five nights at the Royal Kona Resort. The only problem we had was on arrival when the computers were down and we couldn't check in. But they took our luggage for us - and it was only a 20 minute wait before we were able to get into our room. We thought this was a great place to stay for a reasonable price. We upgraded to an ocean view room […] - it wasn't total ocean view - we were on the side of the hotel and could also see the hills of Kona - but the view that we did have of the ocean was wonderful none the less. The rooms are a bit tired - but clean and tidy. We loved the open air bar - and the staff were great. One of the best things about this hotel is the location. Right on the waters edge - and just a few minutes walk into Kona village. Wonderful. We would definitely stay there again. We had an awesome holiday. Leer más

Bar and restaurant looks over the ocean, right on beach, Older resort, clean, well kept, very excellent staff. Skip breakfast, go up the street for something yummy. Walk to everything, or tours pick up. Stay here every year and always look forward to it.

We stayed here for our first night in Kona . It wasn't but about 11 miles from the airport. Very comfortable stay, staff was friendly and it had a beautiful view. Price was reasonable and close to shops ect.

I was very disappointed with the room accommodations.. The room had an odor when you walked thru the door. The receptionist mentioned that the rooms were renovated, but she failed to say what century. The hotel grounds were very nice, but it seems they overlooked the hotel rooms and in my opinion, I would have been better off paying for Motel 6. This […] place is way overpriced. Leer más

The Royal Kona hotel is tired and in need of refurbishment. The carpets are delapidated and the bathrooms are becoming worn out. Despite this, the rooms were clean and comfortable and the hotel is more conveniently located to shopping and restaurants than some competitors. The luau was great.

Good location and excellent sunsets and Mai Tais from Don's Mai Tai Bar. Older place but well-maintained and very helpful and friendly staff.

I've stayed at the Royal Kona several times and always find their hotel warm, inviting, and full of Hawaiian charm. It's big and open and the views from the Don the Beachcomber bar and restaurant are incredible. We always try to upgrade to a corner king room when it's available (for a small fee) as the views are outstanding from the wrap around lanai. […] The rooms are dated, but they are large and now have flat screen t.v.s, coffee maker, and small fridge. For the price you won't find a better view or more centralized location in Kona. Leer más
