"fighting your way past the smokers"
Stayed for 2 nights for a theatre trip, to begin on arrival offered a junior suite upgrade at a reasonable rate and a good discount on breakfast all good. Went out for dinner as there was a very noisy crowd in the main conference room, on the way out was greeted by 20 people standing on the hotel main entrance steps smoking, which was a particular feature […] of the hotel over the next 2 days. The room has no heating except for an air handling unit previously used as an engine on Concorde but rejected as it was too noisy, and a small towel rail to heat a vast bathroom without the benefit of double glazing. We went to bed as it was too cold to do anything else. At about 2.30am we were awoken by the very drunk and very loud, who decided outside our room was a good place to talk/ shout asked them to turn it down greeted with the usual drunk comments. Not to worry they soon went on their merry way. Bath / shower water temp never rose above warm in the 2 days we were there. 2nd night we had a female pop star who sang at the top of her voice for us for 35 mins at 2am the same song over and over again "she had the key" Breakfast was canteen style and was okay not 4 star but far from bad except for one crucial thing the tea was pre made and put out in little jugs and it was stewed to within an inch of its life, the coffee was no better, they make you cook your own toast but you cant make your own tea/ coffee. Good bits the staff were excellent and the concierge service brilliant. This is our 3rd stay but there are better cheaper hotels very close by and we will try our luck there next time. Leer más
"Not what it seems"
The room was old fashioned and falling apart. I was located beside some service room and the noise was very annoying. Small rooms big price. Won't be back.
"Elegance, kindness, safe and great local"
I took my son to London for the first time. I have been many times but never stayed at this wondrous hotel. This is the BEST HOTEL in London and I will never stay anywhere else ever. THE STAFF IS POLITE and the decor is stunning. loved the old style but modern renovations. LOVE IT!!
"Hotel Russell"
One week stay during a business course. Meeting room very poor layout and major issues with internet connection. In summary very expensive, poor service and bad food.
"Hotel Russell London - Great location"
Good hotel. Walking distance to Picadilly Square. On the subway line directly from Heathrow. Safe area to walk. Only downfall is no WiFi in the rooms. Had to sit in the lobby. Washroom was a bit tight but clean and good condition. Would definitely stay again.
"Hotel Russell"
The Hotel Russell in Russell Square was situated in an ideal location, underground, colleges, local amenities and some fabulous shops. Night life was hopping and a great energy about the place. Will defenitely stay again!!
"Hotel Russell, London"
Fantastic Hotel, Great location, Excellent staff, Beautiful room, Highly reccomend.
"hotel russell close to theatres"
Everything was lovely but i did expect the room to be larger, Travel Lodge rooms are larger..Would definately book again though everything we needed on the doorstep..A very special stay on my partners 50th birthday and a fantasic local Indian restaurant, best madras curry ever.
The location is fantastic, only about fifteen minutes walk from the west end; perhaps five more down to Picadilly Circus. It's about the same distance up to Camden as well, if that is what you're looking for. The subway goes all the way from Heathrow to Russel Square -- basically you emerge from the building behind the hotel -- so you can get to and […] from the airport cheaply and relatively easy. We took a cab from the airport to the hotel and, perhaps also due to some roadworks, cost about £100 and took 35 minutes. The subway out took perhaps 55 minutes. Although we booked two Executive Single rooms, they were quite different. One had nice mood lighting, decorations and a large 42" TV, the other had pretty dull lighting, almost no decorations, small(er) TV but instead had a bathtub in its bathroom. In my room, the air conditioning was loud and pretty poor; however I've been at places with much louder AC, so it wasn't that bad. The breakfasts are nice but hugely expensive. You can get a full english (though not as a buffet, if that is important to you) around the corner for about 1/4 of the price. The continental breakfast is quite a bit cheaper and if that is what you want, you will have more trouble finding a comparable breakfast just outside the hotel. Leer más
"Loved the hotel"
Great Hotel and very nice staff in Hotel Russell. Loved my stay over there and it is very central for everything in Central London. The only (small) downside is the fact that some guests should be a bit less noisy, wooden floors and running children is not nice in the middle of the night but this has nothing to do with the hotel but more with the parents […] not keeping their children quiet. Will certainly getting back to this hotel in the future Leer más
"Hotel Russel"
Website pictures does not correspond to reality. The so called renovation was made in haste. Shabby rooms. Cleanliness at very low level. Had to call twice for them to re-clean my room. Hair and other remains from previous guest present in linen and in bathroom. Sound insulation obsolete. Disco in conference room made my room vibrate and made it impossible […] to sleep. Breakfast a very clear disappointment. Not even possible to brew your own tea. Can not understand that the hotel can be ranked 4 stars. Clearly 3 stars. Not for business travelers. Internet connection wobbly and got double charged for the usage. Would not recommend to anybody. Leer más

"Hotel Russel - consider other choices"
This hotels staff sucks, really bad service. The toilet was full of earlier guests poo. The restaurant forgot my order so I had to wait a long time for service. During one night, the fire alarm started and the chaos it started was to be expected but the staff was totally confused and if there would have been a real fire I think a lot of people would […] have died ! No control of the situation. I liked to stay at the hotel when it was a Forte chain hotel but now it sucks for the money you pay. Leer más

"Over priced and not 4 star"
i stayed in a single room. Although in a fabulous location and impressive from the outside, from the second i entered the hotel the service and comfort was lacking. The reception staff struggled to find my booking and then insisted on repeatedly trying to sell me breakfast, which i didn't want. Having paid to find a hotel with internet access provided, […] this information was again lacking in the guest drectory, rooms and when asking staff. The rooms were tatty and overly warm. In my first room i had to put the airconditioning on, for this to be deafeningly noisy. I moved rooms where this was slightly quieter and the temperature a little more bearable, but still the room was too hot in the night, and because it faced the main road I had the worst night's sleep in several months, despite wearing ear plugs. Furnishing in the room was dated, assorted tatty furniture and appliances, and you could see the peeling paint in the bathroom, as well as evidence of black mould in the grouting. The room was overpriced by about 50%. It was not what I expected from a 4 star hotel. Leer más

"Pretty shabby in the rooms"
Looks better in the pics than in reality. Pay the premium for the refurbished upper floors … but even then the modernization looks like an amateur DIY process.

"Hotel Russell - Loud!"
I've not had such a bad nights' sleep in a long time. I had a single room on the fourth floor overlooking the inside of the building, where all the mechanics are located. Not a great view, but at least I had a window. The noise is about on par with someone running a vacuum cleaner in the next room. My real problem was with the air conditioning. The […] room was quite warm, even for a nice-ish day in October. It was too warm to sleep without using the AC, but the noise from the unit was similar to running a lawn mower. I made do until about 3am, when I decided I did need to get some sleep! Turned the AC off, and woke up at about 5 from the heat in the room. A no-win situation! It's a nice enough hotel, unless you want to sleep... Leer más

"Hotel Russell - great building"
Just back from 2 nights in London, staying at The Russell was very convenient to where I needed to be. The building is amazing and when leaving friends outside it was great for them to see the lobby and outside of the hotel. The room was small, as I only had a single but perfect for what I needed. Like many hotels in Europe in the older areas, the room […] was a bit dated, but charming all the same. I have stayed at some of the nicest hotels in the world and I was not in any way uncomfortable. I would stay here again if business takes me back to Russell Square area of London. Leer más

"Charm and tradition"
We returned to the Russell after a long absence. We had stayed in other hotels on other visits. We were glad to be back and have already booked our next stay. Bloomsbury is still charming and now the Eurostar is in walking distance, as are Euston, the British Museum, Sir John Soane Museum and so on
"The Hotel Russell, London."
We were comfortable in the hotel and the staff could not have been more helpful and friendly towards us. The breakfast was delicious. For out of town visitors such as ourselves the convenience of being near to the underground and thus very handy for visiting Covent Garden, theatres, Royal Parks and shopping was perfect. In short we had a memorable […] stay. Leer más
"Light sleepers stay away"
it was hard to believe that this hotel is classified as 4 star, i could live with the tiny room and the absolute run down appearance of the lobby, hallways and public spaces (frankly an easy fix) but the acoustics in the rooms was horrible and to make matters works the head of the bed was against the corridor wall so the noise was even worse-you could […] literally hear and understand the words being spoken in the hallway and any door closing was like a loud bang-the location was great but it really doesnt matter if you cannot get any rest-will definitely not be back Leer más
"36 hours in London"
Very conveniently located, close to Underground and main rail stations. Safe area - we walked home after a dinner out one night. Our room was great but the shower head attachment was broken and fell on my head. Staff were apologetic. Lovely bar - very clubby and dark.
"Good hotel - a couple of service issues"
There is no wifi in the rooms. Repeat - NO WIFI IN THE ROOMS. I had never even thought to double check that there would be (and hopefully free) wifi in the rooms. Just assumed with it being 2011 and it a larger hotel, that would be available. There is wifi in the lobby but only free for 30 minutes and who wants to curl up in their pajamas with their […] ipads in the lobby? Hopefully the hotel will upgrade soon. Also, upon arrival we were told there was a discount at a close by gym. Arrived at the gym and they were unfriendly and told us no such discount exists. Other than that, rooms are comfortable and spacious for London. Clean and in a great location. A skip from subway stop which is AWESOME. Love the hotel...wifi was only issue and my fault for not researching. Also, there were 3 electrical outlets in the room!!! We were able to charge all our devices at once ...that was incredible after hotels with only 1 outlet. Also, lots of mirrors to get ready with...a far cry from me having to do hair/makeup without mirrors and outlets near each other at other hotels. Definitely a bonus! Air conditioning worked well too! Mega bonus for Americans! :) Leer más
Nice place but 2 big problems - 1] Air con either on full blast directly on me in bed or off - no flow settings ; I therefore had to turn it off after first night & swelter in the heat. The chill blast gave me very painful neck spasm for a week needing osteopath treatment. 2] Horrific traffic noise even at 3 & 4 am! It woke me & kept me awake even […] with earplugs. A place in this location & price range should have the facade sealed & windows double glazed. Leer más
"Russell Hotel should be avoided"
Very strange place with tons of problems. Room was shabby even though it was a "newly renovated" one. Lots of things in our room as well as friends' rooms just didn't work. Also had a day without hot water that wasn't announced. If they had asked about half the price I would say these things are to be expected but at their rates these things can't be […] overlooked. I know that I won't stay there again. Leer más
"Convenient location"
The location of the hotel is great and it only takes one minute walk to the Russell Square Underground station. The room is decent in size but it is inconvenient that they do not have slipper and tooth brush & paste in the room. The staff in general are helpful.
"Hotel Russell"
Very helpful and accommodating staff. Loads to do and see in the surrounding area. Close to the tube station and shopping areas. Rooms are clean and orderly, and there are plenty of services provided including breakfast. Remember, you're in London!
The Russell Hotel was a great location for using the tube, as, it was just a short walk. The hotel was clean and most of the staff was helpful.
"Comfortable and close to Central London"
This was my second time staying at the Hotel Russell and I thoroughly enjoyed it... again. Small, but beautifully decorated room with a nice, large luxurious bathroom. Hotel Russell is also right across the street from Russell Square, down the street from the British Museum and around the corner from the Russell Square Underground station. 10-15 minutes […] to Covent Garden and 15-20 mins to Oxford Street. 20 minutes to the West End and loads of restaurants. Food was pricey and internet access was pricey, but yes, I would stay there again. Leer más
"excellent location"
The staff of the hotel is very helpful in every way possible. Every request or need was met with immediate response and every problem if arose with an immediate solution. Two problems made my stay of two weeks less than perfect: not enough closet space for two in a superior room and spongy pillows that gave me the sensation of lying on a marshmellow. All […] in all, The Russell Hotel became my home away from home and as a guest for a prolonged period I feel I "earned" the privilege of having an objective opinion. Leer más
"Russell Hotel, overpriced and underwhelming"
The room they gave my wife and I was was the size of a small child's room. We could barely move in, so we had to take turns one of us had to be in bed while the other was in the bathroom or at the "desk" (a small table with a chair). This would have been tolerable were the price to stay there not so exorbitant. Moreover, they charged an egregious amount […] for their breakfast "buffet" and had the audacity to say that I had to pay extra for a drink if I didn't want coffee or orange juice. They offer "free" internet in the lobby for 1/2 hour/day, but it was slower then when I used a dial-up modem. If you buy Internet for your room, it is extremely expensive and the connection is still very slow and cuts-out frequently. The staff was nice and helpful, though, but it doesn't make up for the price of things at the hotel. In sum, it was a 2 1/2 star hotel that thinks it needs to charge 4 star prices. Leer más

"The receptionist all look like new comers."
The hotel is OK, but the sevices are so bad. It looks like they are all students, they had to ask other people how to do their jobs all the time. They made a lot of mistakes during our three days staying.
"Hotel Russell -Convinient location but run down"
It is not a value for money type hotel. The hotel lift is too small and the TV is not a flat one. What is worse is that you can't find any business channels. All the rooms facing the interior part of the building (where a huge number of air-conditioners'compressors/generators are installed) are very noisy. .In a word, this hotel needs to be fully r […] enovated. "A good London hotel"
A very comfortable hotel in a great location. It is in walking distance of the British Museum and has good access to public transportation. It is around the corner from the Russell Square stop on the Piccadilly Line and across the square from the Number 7 bus (Oxford Street). I have stayed there before and will again.

"Nice location, but kind of run down"
Some aspects of this hotel are great - a fantastic location and a quaint historic building. Other aspects were frustrating - mainly the fairly uncomfortable bed, expensive internet service that was incredibly slow, and very mediocre breakfast. I probably wouldn't book here again.
"Hotel Russell, Ideal location."
We found the hotel to be in an ideal location to Covent Garden and Oxford street, a very good position for all of the shopping you could want, it's a pity the protestors spoilt our one night away! Nothing to do with the hotel though, a very warm and plesent hotel.
"Russell Hotel ~ Good location"
Close to the Metro and bus lines & walkable as well to major attractions. The hotel staff was friendly, however we had a housekeeper enter our room at 8:15am with out knocking first! Not the wake up call I wanted!
"Victorian Landmark -- convenient location"
Bloomsbury is a great location from which to explore the rest of London, and the Russell is right on the square, around the corner from a tube stop, and two-three blocks from the Britosh Museum. They have a full breakfast, the rooms are a bit cramped, but the staff is helpful. The concierge managed to get me a taxi to Heathro from the hotel for 17 pounds, […] cheaper than the train. Leer más
"very small rooms, hard beds, great location"
Its a wonderful old building in a fantastic location - great character in the entrance and lots of history. But the room was tiny, the single bed was rock hard and even on the sixth floor you could hear traffic so not very well sound proofed. Its atmospheric and has a lovely old bar and helpful staff but I would not stay again because of the bed and […] for that reason wouldnt recommend it. Leer más
