Oxford Spires Four Pillars

1) We had several problems with the temperature of the water in the shower, with the flux of the water in the tap and in the toilets. They were only partially solved during a stay of 9 days!! It took 3-4 calls to have a late reaction from the administration. All people were always kind but it was a little shameful for us to repeat the recclamations […] so many times that at the end we were just giving up and accepting the bad conditions in the water services. 2) During two nights there was a couple shouting in a near-by room and it was impossible to sleep, apparently there was nobody taking care of the issue. If we cannot sleep in a hotel room, then what is it for? 3) All mornings starting at 07:00, a lot of noisy conversations and laughings happen in the near-by corridors, coming from the hotel personnel and other guests with/out children. Again, if one cannot sleep in peace in a room hotel, I wonder what is it useful for. Leer más

A little abrupt at check in as we arrived early and they were busy. Other than that staff extremely friendly and helpfull plus ideal location as only 15 mins walk into centre of Oxford, some of which could be done via footpaths alongside river and boat houses. Did not like repeated knocks(3 or 4) during the morning of our departure by room service, […] we were afterall checking out by 11.00am! A very good hotel, with a good restaurant and friendly service.

Nice hotel and a 15 minute walk to the City centre by road or on the Thames towpath. Breakfast was expensive for what was available. Room was adequate but nothing special.

we stayed for 5 nights, and had a rearly good holiday in Oxford. The hotel is rather close to the town-center and the room and the hotel was very nice and clean, and with a very professionel staf. The hotel was like a well-functioning maschine, running perfect 24-7.

This is a low-rise hotel built in a sympathetic style to fit with the area; it is quite large, however and it took us time to find our way round. On the first night we met several similarly bewildered people wandering the corridors. I think the problem is that part of the main building is accessed by a separate lift. Not a problem if you're on your […] own but we had requested 2 rooms close to each other and they couldn't have been further apart! The hotel is in a good state of repair and our rooms were fine. The reception staff were polite and efficient and they were anxious to help when we reported that an idiot was chasing horses in a 4WD vehicle across the neighbouring fields. The hotel is in lovely grounds within easy walking distance of the centre of town and on a bus route. Stayed for a week and only got the wireless working once. But it is a peaceful hotel just outside of downtown, with a gate out the back leading the the towpath. Great for a morning run!

Two issues The hotel claims that it is 1/2 mile from Oxford, that maybe but it is not in walking distance to the centre and we spent over £30 going in and out of Oxford as the reason for our trip to visit the centre so I find their advertising very misleading! There is no shuttle to the centre. After looking like this was good value this made this an […] expensive choice for us. The walls were paper thin and we heard EVERYTHING above us and below us. although one would generally like a more central hotel, in oxford, when you take into account how busy the roads are in and out, its better to get a hotel on the outskirts and walk in. you get to see the folly bridge and the island and locks and more of oxford than you would otherwise plus the hotel is half the price of its counterparts. save your money, […] use your legs. lovely hotel with leisure facilities Leer más

The room was reasonable size and clean. The furnishings could have been a bit more updated. However, the location and the relaxing countryside surroundings makes up for any shortcomings. You can reach the river from the back of the hotel. A very nice walk along the river to the bridge then 10 min to Oxford city center. Free parking, free WiFi Internet […] is included. lovely setting and close to town centre bus service excellant . Bit disappointed with hotel restuarant did complain and to be fair they made every effort to compensate us for bad meal with a few free drinks so in all quite happy and would stay there again

I booked a connoisseur room with balcony as a suprise weekend for my girlfriend. For the price of the room i was hoping for something a little bit special. When we arrived the outside is very grand, ( although there is an extention going on at the back). The room however was not special in the slightest, not far off a premier inn really for over treble […] the price! I expected something better and was very dissapointed. The balcony area was not great either, it was joined onto next door, and if your a non-smoker you just get all the smoke from your neighbours. The hotel is located 15' walking from downtown Oxford, in a green and peaceful area. Our room was nice, quite big, clean, confortable. Very good breakfast, great, fresh food, all inclusive. High rate!

The hotel had clear instructions of its location and was well placed for Oxford sightseeing. The hotel staff were courteous and helpful. The rooms were spacious and clean. I would use this hotel again if i went to Oxford.

Wonderful location (use the back path that leads to the river and then to town). Friendly staff willing to go out of the way to help a guest. So much to see in town, wear comfortable shoes.

Hotel is located 15 minutes walking distance from downtown Oxford. Room we stayed in is located on the second floor; no elavators; a pain major pain with heavy baggage. Room 220 toilet flushing mechanism was not working correctly & was not repaired during our stay.

The Oxford Spires Four Pillars hotel is a very nice looking hotel, however some areas let it down for us. Myself and the wife went there for 2 days with our 20 month year old girl. We only booked for 2 of us, however when we had to bring the little one with us the hotel were fine about us having her in our room free of charge. On looking up the hotel […] the pictures show a nicely presented hotel with big grounds, which looked ideal. However, when you get to the hotel it is a bit of a maze of annexes and car parks. There seems only to be one expanse of grass, by the drive as you come in, and there isn't much to do on it. One first point to note, as you drive through the local area to find the hotel, it does seem to be in a very run-down part of Oxford, although it does get better the closer you get to the hotel. The hotel itself is very nice and modern. Seems very popular with businessmen/women, probably due to the fact that it's very easy to get to/from the motorway. Rooms were ok for the price, although no aircon which was a bit naff. Luckily we'd planned ahead and brought our own fan. Another minor bad point, a lot of the lamps had euro plug sockets, so everything had to be plugged in by the kettle as that was they were the only 3 pin sockets (x2). On the first night we couldn't go out to dine in the evening so we ordered room service, which was totally awful. I ordered a gammon steak with egg and chips. I got a very undercooked piece of gammon, cold chips and hard fried egg. Not exactly appetising. My wife's was even worse. She ordered a burger with coleslaw and caramelised onions, with chips and salad. It came as an overcooked toasted bun, with a coldish burger in the middle, nothing else, cold chips, a dollop of coleslaw on the side, no onions as they'd forgotten. We also ordered 2 desserts, which were forgotten. Overall a truly shocking service. The hotel was lovely I would highly recommend it. The rooms were spacious and clean. The staff were very helpful and the spa facillities were excellent!! The city centre wasnt too far away about a 15 minute walk along the river, which was nice as at the time of our stay there was boat racing going on.

Excellent hotel in almost all respects. Location only a few minutes walk from Oxford centre but felt like it was in the countryside. Breakfasts very good and rooms very comfortable. The only thing to let them down was what I'll call an inefficiency or lack of knowledge by the reception staff. They were very friendly but just didn't seem to know what […] they were doing. For example we bought tickets for Blenheim from the hotel only to find out that they had not stamped the tickets correctly...even though I had specifically asked the receptionist did it need to be stamped and he said no...In the end it was only a small thing as the staff in Blenheim were extremely helpful and sorted it out but it could have been a major annoyance...Other then that this hotel was excellent and I would be happy to stay there again. Wonderful stay, large corner room overlooking beautiful field. Did not choose breakfast --very expensive. Staff was congenial and very helpful. The only draw back -- about 2 miles from center city but city busses run regularly and often. Major thoroughfare.

Although the hotel is starting to show signs of needing a refresh (it was opened in 1999), they did a great job for us. We booked a party group to celebrate my daughter's graduation and apart from silliness like asking for detailed menu choices to be provided two weeks in advance (they admitted they would not turn us away if all had just turned up on […] the night), they were very good. All the staff were extremely polite and helpful. The only thing I would change is their standard tea. It was disgusting. When we mentioned it at breakfast, we were immediately offered Twinings, but really that should have been the first choice. Leer más

Great hotel. By the river for walks into town or the other way for the delightful Isis farmhouse pub. Our room was miles away from reception but a good size and comfortable. Walls are thin! But we had good neighbours. Great staff and would definitely go back.

Pleasant walk into the city if you use the towpath rather than main road and much quicker! Lovely city - walked miles. Didn't eat at hotel so can't comment on food.

My expectations were not great as I have to admit the Hotel was not my first choice. But it was so dissapointing-nothing to recommend it. The decor is tired, the rooms are clinical. The bath was badly stained. The TV had really bad reception. It was noisy when we got back at night. I didn't say anything because my daughter had a sickness bug and she […] just needed a bed. Typical 4-star quality - this hotel lives up to its star rating; ample parking; no more than 15 minutes walk from central Oxford. For those with young children, there is a decent park opposite the hotel with good playground. You can also walk into Oxford this way avoiding the busy road - this route is also a very popular cycle track for those with bikes. […] Food in the bar was good and reasonably priced - pleasant atmosphere. All staff were polite and bright; we got the impression that the hotel had taken care to train its staff well. There is free wifi via a voucher code from reception, but the connection was 'flakey' when we tried. Not sure if this is a common issue? Did not have the breakfast - as this was a leisure visit, it was easy to walk into Oxford and eat there. If visiting on a Monday, be aware that the Ashmolean Museum and several of the colleges are not open, and there are limited opening hours also for other attractions - notably, the PittsRiver Museum (this and the Natural History Museum are excellent, by the way - also, if you have kids; there were lots of school trips there when we visited, and all the children seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the experience). Brilliant location - you can walk in to Oxford City Centre in 15 minutes. Quite and serene location. Hotel decor, rooms, lounge area are all good. But misses out on attention to detail - TV in room was ancient, limited range of channels and had a strange all for one control that didn't have teletext or a subtitles button. Also the volume had a limiter […] - good idea but was set far too low so we couldn't hear it properly. The wifi was broken on most of the two days we were there and one of the lifts went out of service as well. We expected a minibar from the hotel website but none was present in the room- especially as it was an executive room! Room service was quite poor - glasses,mugs were not changed - neither the soaking wet towel! Not big things really - but in my book you expect attention to detail in a four star, or are my standards too high? It's still worth staying though - overall it's fine and the location for Oxford - you can park for free and walk in in 15 minutes or take a bus is brilliant. Leer más

Overall a good hotel. Location is nice but it is a 20 min walk into the center of Oxford. Staff very helpful, we arrived well before the check it time and they arranged rooms for us with minimal hassle. The hotel has free wi fi but it wasn't working for most of the weekend.

Overall not a bad experience excepting the shower was cold and the walk from reception to the room seemed interminable. reception staff very helpful as were waiting staff in the bar/restaurant.

Staff were friendly, hotel located in excellent spot as it is located 15mins from City centre and surrounded by wonderful countryside. Also parking is free and can be left there for the whole duration especially as parking in city centre is very pricey and one way system is very confusing for outsiders. As has been said on other reviews it is close to Oxford to walk in which was a godsend and whilst it looks attractive on the outside the rooms leave a lot to be desired. TV remote didn't work, and was poor picture quality. Room was dated and not enought towels. Also the internet didn't work in my room either.

Stayed just one night, was happy overall - rooms are large if not the most up-to-date, the hotel is within half an hour's walk of the city centre (and on a frequent bus route), and has good facilities. The hotel is conveniently located. Parking in Oxford can be difficult and expensive but it is easy enough to leave the car at the hotel and walk into the city. All rooms are non-smoking (although there were signs that someone had smoked in our room in the past). The restaurant did not seem very busy but we did not use it - there is a wide range of […] restaurants available in Oxford. Breakfast can be busy but since we were in no particular hurry we took it quite late - the hotel stops breakfast service at 09.30 - but had no problems with getting a table. The breakfast was quite good. I had a problem with (free) internet access which the staff were unable to rectify. Fortunately the system seemed to clear itself later and I could make a connection. Walking distance to Oxford with parking. Caters more for conferences than tourists. Comfortable but a little noisy. Restaurant was not that good but OK. Food served in the bar was better. They gave us free internet useage but cut it off at 9:00 am on the day we were to check out.

I went with my slightly disabled mother and we had a great time. As we didn't have a car it was conveniently situated near a bus stop with frequent services in and out of Oxford. The staff were very helpful and we really enjoyed our stay.

The hotel itself is in a perfect location with just a 15 minute walk into the city centre, as well as backing onto the river, which is a beautiful walk. The hotel rooms are very clean, spacious and comfortable and we will defintley go back to this hotel in future. My only concern were the prices of drinks at the bar! Nice hotel, Bar/lounge was lovely Excellent service at reception. Room was OK though strange accesible bathroom.TOO HOT! Thick duvets in August and no AC...long trek to Oxford, 20 minutes walk, though Bus OK.

We visited Oxford to see the city, University and sites connected with the Morse and Lewis TV series. We enjoyed the 20 minute walk along the river bank from the hotel to the town. We stayed two nights. Room was great. Buffet breakfasts were excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful. Will stay again next time we're in Oxford
