"Skiathos Palace Hotel"
Beautiful hotel lobby and pool/restaurant area with a great view. Uncomfortable mattress that took away from all the positives the hotel has. I've unfortunately had better sleeping conditions in some of the hostels I've stayed in. Time to donate the mattresses to a shelter and replace them with some that better fit the hotels classy appearance.
"Wonderful, Old-style Family-owned Hotel"
We enjoyed ourselves immensely at the Skiathos Palace, and we are definitely going back. There are a few things to know about this hotel so that you are as happy as we were. (The wrong expectations could ruin it for you, as 4-star ratings in Europe are different than in the U.S.) First, if money isn't an issue, book one of the fully renovated rooms […] on the upper floors. Some of the older rooms have been updated only...still comfortable, but could be off-putting to the uninitiated (This is a very large but, as we learned, family-owned hotel, so a full renovation will take time). And, if at all possible, book a sea view. Second, just know that this is 1970's architecture through and through (reminiscent of some of the old hotels in Hawaii)...it must have been considered very upscale in its day, and continues to be well-cared for. An important note for some is that despite its several floors, there is no elevator in the hotel due to the period it was built. The staff is wonderful...upbeat and friendly. We especially enjoyed the waitstaff. The food in the upstairs open air restaurant is very good ... the fish grilled to perfection (truly...this part of Greece has grillmen who specialize in just that, and they have "the" guy.) Breakfast is quite a buffet, with a great opportunity to try some local specialties, like the "spoon sweets" made from local fruits. The hotel's best attribute, however, is its proximity to the beach...positioned on a hill across the road from the best beach on the island you can get to without a boat. This may seem inconvenient - it's not (plus there's a shuttle to the beach if you need it); this affords views of one of the most beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters you will ever know, spectacular sunsets, and the beautiful greenery in the distance. The outdoor pool area with pool bar/cafe are stunning, and enjoy all of the views I just described.
