The hotel room was really nice, as was the staff. We have stayed here before and were disappointed that nothing was mentioned at the time of our reservation about the renovation of the lobby, bar, and restaurant areas. They were completely closed.

Did not notice at time of booking online that hotel is being extensively refurbished and only discovered on arrival that lobby did not exist! No dining room or any bar facilities other than room service. No reduction was offered despite being annual guests for some years. Room was clean but in need of update. Excellent location. Rather disappointed at indifference by staff to our predicament.

Great price to stay at a spacious, clean, comfortable room at The New York Helmsley. Location for us was great. The staff was helpful and pleasant. The only problems were the on going renovations, which we were aware of. Noise was not an issue, but it would have been nice to dine in the hotel. I believe renovations will be done in December. I would definitely recommend this hotel at the price we paid.

Hotel is rehabbing the downstairs so you need to hit the third floor for check in. VERY friendly staff. I got a king bed but in a smoking room. It wasn't terrible but non-smokers can smell it no matter what you spray and clean a room with. Bed was comfortable and a good sized room. Fine for business travel now - but if on vacation seek something less busy with reconstruction.

The hotel lobby was under construction but this was disclosed before we got there. The staff was very friendly and the room was great. The hotel was about 1 block from the subway which made it very convenient. I would use this hotel again and would recommend it. Once the lobby is completed, this hotel should be one of New York's best.

The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly...but they have some serious renovation going on. There is really no lobby to meet in as they are under construction. But the price was right, the room was clean, and what else do you need. It was the best deal I could find in NY fro the money. I would go back in a minute...at the same price!

PROS: Friendly, helpful staff. Relatively large (for NYC) and clean rooms. Convenient location, especially to UN and Grand Central. Comfortable beds. CONS: Lobby/restaurants still under construction. Street noise even from upper level rooms (windows not double hung). Bathrooms clean, but in need of upgrade/remodel--- plumbing fixtures were not in good repair; shower curtain seemed too small for shower.

The first floors of the hotel were under construction. It was noisy. My room was next to the elevator and so I heard it all night long. There was no restaurant during the construction, but could have ordered room service from somewhere they said. Room itself was nice and comfortable, but not well insulated. Heard the traffic all night.

While still under renovation - the hotel offered nothing but a nice room. The bedding was very comfortable and the hotel was nice and quiet. Bathroom was looking tired - tub and tile on floor sure could use updating. No coffee, no fridge and really poor cable - so don't plan to send any time in the room other than sleeping! Location was fabulous - just a few blocks down from Grand Central - you walk right by the Chrystler Building. Plenty of food options right out the door - felt safe walking even at night.

sobre value="5""Remodeling - Since June 2009 - No lounge or Restaurant Service"
Comentado por Brigitte, deTucson, el oct 13, 2009
The room was great. Everything else was horrible. When we checked in we were greeted by plastic on the floor and sheet rock. The lobby and all other amenities were in a state of remodel. Unfortunately we did not "see" the small note that the hotel was under remodel. The price we paid did not reflect that the hotel was under remodel. The concierge and front desk were on the 3rd floor without any room to accomodate them. If you wanted food they had room service but were adding a 15% charge as well as $3.00 per person. I think if they are under remodel and their restaurant is not available they should be only too happy to provide room service for free to accomodate the inconvenience. One evening we went out til 4 am and we were greeted by a man who seemed to be straight from the Soprano's. He did not identify himself as hotel security and he did not have any badge or uniform for that matter. He demanded to see our room key. No polite "hello I am from hotel security" or anything remotely close to that. While we dug for our key he asked some other guests (in their 20's) if he could bum a cigarette from them. Amazing. When I contacted the hotel manager about this incident, (at 4 am), I was reminded that it was 4 am. Really, doesn't everyone stay out late when they visit a new city - especially New York. I explained how rude the man was and also questioned why we were not told about the remodel. Her response was "Well we have been under remodel since June". My response is "get another contractor".

hotel under renovation, so there is a lot going on. But, I have to say, the elevators were very timely and quick. Not much waiting considering the renovation and size of hotel. Had the air conditioning on all the time as its not quite cold in NY and still a little humid. Air conditioner rattled 24/7 but its better than street noise and it was comfortable in the room. Furnishings a little dated, but they tried very hard to make the bed comfortable with new bedding. It worked for me. Internet worked well and was free...that was worth it since I'm a business traveler.

Comentado por Lyn, dePhoenix, el oct 1, 2009
The rooms are comfortable and roomy especially for New York. But the fact that it is in the middle of major renovation was frustrating. There are no restaurants/lounges in the building. Staff was not very friendly, especially due to the fact that occupants are at a disadvantage. We arrived early and staff was not accomodating. Our group took up four rooms so I believe that should have been more customer service.

As always, the hotel staff was fantastic. On arrival we were greeted with the entire first floor under construction and access to the elevators and temporary lobby bordered by plywood and plastic. It would have been nice to know this was coming, but all in all, the stay (our third this year) was very nice. We missed the great bar and the spacious entry, but the architectural renderings suggest the dust of the next few months will be worth the inconvenience and temporary ugliness. Make sure your rate is adjusted for the work-in-progress, but don't fail to stay because of that work.

This hotel is in a great location. Furnishings in the room are a little dated, however, our room was clean and maintained well. Our biggest disappointment was the extent of the remodeling underway during our stay. There was not a lobby, restaurant, coffee shop, etc. available to guests. Comentado por Gordon, deAtlanta, el sep 8, 2009
The New York Helmsley is undergoing a significant renovation of the lobby and entry level. The result: no dining facilities and no bar. It was possible to order room service food, but dining this way would be quite expensive. This condition at this hotel will likely exist for weeks if not longer. There was no warning on the hotel web site when we booked (unless it was there but in fine print). We stayed there because we were attending a wedding and this was the suggested hotel for wedding guests. Before booking rooms at this hotel, it would be wise to ask about the renovation currently underway.

I was worried after I read some reviews. I stayed for a week with my daughter, mother, and aunt. We had two rooms and they were able to put us next door to each other. All of use were pleased with the comfortable beds, convient location, and friendliness of the staff. Hotel restraunt and bar was being remodled but I doubt we would have eaten there with all of the great places NYC has to offer. This was my first visit to NY and I had heard how small the hotel rooms were. Ours seem typical hotel room size with 2 double beds, chair, desk, and armoire. The new TV was on the desk and a little inconvient to see from one of the beds but since we spent very little time in the room it was not an issue. I would not mind staying there again.

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel for 5 days, and we had a fantastic time. The hotel was very comfortable, with large rooms, comfortable bed; and despite the renovation work going on downstairs, this made no difference to our trip, as no noise could be heard from our room and none of the services we wanted were affected. The restuarants in the hotel were closed, however they did offer room service for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We didn't require food in the hotel anyway, as we walked to one of the many restaurants in Times Square for dinner, and convineantly used 'Pax' next door to the hotel, which was fantastic for breakfast/lunch! The temporary reception and concierge on level 3 were well equipped and always ready to help. The location is great, easy walking distance - just a few blocks from the centre of Times Square, 5th Avenue, Empire State building and the Rockefeller Centre. Couldn't ave chosen anywhere better to stay, and we are looking forward to going back and seeing the finished renovation work!

The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming after our long trip, and our room had fantastic views, including the Empire State Building. Anyone who has trouble sleeping in strange beds will not fail to sleep well in the most comfortable hotel beds ever! The Helmsley is in a great location for Grand Central Station, so you can get anywhere by train or subway, and only a short walk from Times Square and the shopping of 5th Avenue. It would be great to go back and see the newly refurbished lobby!
