The New York Helmsley Hotel

I've stayed in better midtown Manhattan hotels but the NY Helmsley was perfectly situated near Grand Central for getting to the US Open! I had a King room and it was fine for my purposes. The lobby bar was fine for a quick drink before heading out to the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The only disappointment was the Helmsley restaurant situation. […] They had very limited hours for breakfast and lunch and apparently only served a bar dinner menu in the lobby. the hotel is very good relative to the price . very recomended . the only problem that is not in the area of the times squere which is a better location .

My husband stays here on business so we knew what to expect. Location is excellent with good breakfast and lunch places within a couple blocks and a 24 hr drugstore also. We walked to the NYPublic Library, the theatre, and back from the Empire State building. Also walked to Times Square and took in the Discovery museum show on Harry Potter. We had no problems with the hotel room EXCEPT that when the air conditioner was turned all the way down to 55 (this was the way the cleaning staff have been trained to leave it apparently) the room smelled funny. When we set the temperature to a more moderate 72, the smell decreased to almost gone. There is no coffee machine in the room but a great PAX foods next door and a Starbucks down the street make up for it. Great location for adults and business travelers. Did not try the bar. Leer más

We stayed at the New York Helmsley hotel last weekend and had a fantastic experience. The location of the hotel is fantastic for Mid Town and Theatre District destinations and our room located on a corner of the 39th floor offered a fabtastic view of the Chrysler Building. It was my first time in NYC. The stay here was super easy. Check in was fast and very friendly. Made reservations and when I checked in we got upgraded, I dont know if we were just lucky, or if they are just nice like that. But the view was great, the room was very comfortable. The room was well-appointed, quiet, and comfortable. The bed was huge. Bathrobes in the closet. The staff was very courteous and welcoming. The only oversight was that we had no washcloths among our linens. I'm sure the staff would have corrected this, but our stay was short and we worked around it.

Very much in need of facelift, very dated furniture, room was comfortable but amazing no coffee in the room for the price you pay

Hotel was modern. Clean. Guest services staff gladly changed our room from a King to two full size beds. Staff very friendly and helpful. Located 1 block from Grand Central Station. The New York helmsly hotel was just what we were looking for on our trip to New York. The location was perfect as was the hotel itself. The staff were very friendly.The bedroom was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. If I had one complaint it was that there was no complimentay tea and coffee in the bedroom..

My wife and I stayed at The New York Helmsley over a long weekend stay in New York and was pleasantly surprised by our visit at the hotel. The hotel is in walking distance to most of the midtown attractions yet far enough away whereby you don't get the congestion of Times Square. On a recent trip to New York, we found a good deal on Hotels.com of the Helmsley Hotel. The hotel was right on 42nd street in a great location, only a stone throw away from Grand Central station and a short 5-10 minute walk to Times Square. We arrived at 1 pm (3 hours before check-in) and they were able to find a room and accomodate us right away. […] The staff were very friendly, room was in excellent condition and had a very comfortable bed. All in all, we would stay here again and recommend it to others. The only downfall was the $60/day for valet parking, but in New York you can expect to pay quite a bit no matter where you park. cost to park was not as listed it was much more so it cost me two arms for two night was not to happy but all in all it was very good.

I stayed at this hotel in July 2011. The hotel location is very good being close to Grand Central station, Bryant Park, Time Square, Fifth Ave etc. Everything is within a 10 minute walk. Clean rooms, comfortable beds, good service. You will not be disappointed if this is the location you are seeking.

I liked the Helmsley -- but for a hotel of its stature, I expected in-room coffee and a fridge. Both are minor points, but would have liked to have had these small conveniences. Overall, a really nice room, however. Great beds. Nice view of the Chrysler. Near the subway and lovely restaurants.

Very impressed by this hotel.From start to finish of our trip, it was a pleasure to stay here. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. I realise I got a deal on the price for this hotel, but given its relatively upscale range I would have expected: curtains that cover the windows without leaving gaps when drawn to find that my room had been serviced when returning in the early evening (it hadn't been) to be able to adjust the room temperature to my own preferences

My husband and I visited New York for the first time in June 2011 and roomed at the New York Helmsley. We found the rooms to be very comfortable and very clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Staff was very courteous the entire trip. They did not have a king when we checked in (as specified in our Hotels.com reservation), so we were stuck with doubles. They were fine: clean, comfortable and mid-sized. Fitness center was small, but sufficient. There is not an ice machine on each floor, so we had to take an elevator each time. The TV on desk […] took up most of the work area, whil the large former entertainment center in the room made it a bit crowded. It was only a short walk to Grand Central Station. The neighborhood was fine. There was no in-room coffee, so you either paid $5 for the restaurant coffee or went next door for a $2 cup or a short walk around the corner to Starbucks. We got a great deal from Hotels.com, so I would consider our stay a fair value. Rack rate would have been a bit much for what we received. Leer más

Great location for someone who has never been before. Easy access to to all the main attractions. The Hotel staff were helpful and attentive. All really clean and I have to say I'm quite fussy. Close to the main sights the NYH offers all you would want for a city break. The quality of the hotel and staff are very high and we would recommend it to anyone looking for a central hotel. For the price we paid for this place and the location of the hotel....I was more than happy with the hotel. Ask for the 40th floor facing the empire state building.

Hotels is a little dated, but not an issue. Room was decent and actually bigger than typical NYC hotel. I did notice someone else's hair in bathroom on first day, which was not impressive. Fitness center was useless: machines were clearly selected by someone who has never been to a gym. overall was good and would stay there again.

We have just returned from a five day break, staying at the New York Helmsley Hotel. We arrived late in the evening and was advised the room we were expecting was not avaliable(Executive King), we were offered a room with two doubles. We were advised we could swap rooms in the morning. When we got to our room we were pleased with the room and its view […] and decided to stay put. The decor was acceptable,beds were comfy and the bathroom was clean but tired. The view of the Chrysler Building was great, the location of the hotel was super. We didn't eat at the hotel, there are several restaraunts locally. My recommendation to travellers to this hotel is take a travel kettle and your own tea and coffee etc.. I visit NY often, and the Helmsley was a nice surprise in terms of value and convenience. The room was huge by NY standards, and the little chaise was perfect for putting your feet up and having a glass of wine after a long day. Also appreciated the mini-fridge (empty, not a minibar) so I could stash a couple of apples, some water, a bottle of wine […] and some cheese/crackers. Concierge was lame (when I wanted to order in Chinese on a rainy night, she gave me referrals to two places that were out of business) Room service menu is very limited and extremely overpriced. This was our fourth visit to the Helsmsley and as always everything was perfect. We tend to vary our locations when we stay in New York to gain immediate access to different neighbourhoods. The location of the Helmsley gives easy access to all the main sites. Ideal for a first visit and a hotel to which you will be happy to return.

We were very happy with the Helmsley hotel. our room was clean, bright and had a fabulous view. The hotel staff were friendly, courteous and helpful. We loved the location. Yes some renovation is needed, but I understand it will shortly be underway. We will be back.

The Helmsley is in the perfect location in NYC if you're visiting and take the subway everywhere. We did (it's very convenient and safe from our experience). You're a half-block from the "7" train and a block from the rest of the Grand Central subway station. It's generally a nice hotel, but on the downside the maid service is inconsistent and there's […] no alarm clock in the room, no coffee in the room and no mini-fridge. The room was nice, but it's no-frills. Special caution: if you book through travel sites like hotels.com or similar, they claim they can't honor specific room requests (such as king vs. double-twin). We had booked a king and when we showed up they said "sorry, we can't honor that". When we explained that we'd called the hotel directly to confirm the booking and the room type, they capitulated, but the attitude on this was disappointing. So, be SURE to call the hotel directly after booking online, and be SURE they have you down for the right room type. Leer más

We got a very good price for this hotel, but were unsure what to expect. Bad start, we had booked an executive king room and were given a room with two doubles. Receptionist was pretty rudeand said that was what had been booked even though our receipt showed it clearly wasn't. All uphill after that though. Room very comfortable with view of Empire State. […] Lovely bedding and big fluffy towels. Furniture is old but beds really comfortable. Big new flatscreen TV too. You don't spend much time in your room in New York. Too much to see and do. Lots of good restaurants and bars nearby on Second, Third and Lexington. Very good location. I don't think you can expect much more, certainly not for the price we paid. It compares very well with the two previous hotels we have stayed in in Midtown, both of which were more expensive. Enjoyed our stay which was very comfortable. Close to subway and Grand Central, so easy to get around the city, but away from the busiest parts. ate in the hotel once - not chap but good. for chaper breakfasts and light meals Pax diner is almost next door and has a good range of items.

The Helmsley is located a short bus ride or walk from Grand Central Station, and access to the extensive underground train system is easy. Cafe and small supermarket very close by, and some reasonably priced restaurants 2-3 blocks away. However the water was lukewarm for the first two days of our stay, the ice machines didn't work, and neither did our […] fridge. The latter was replaced when we complained. This hotel was the only hotel we stayed in which did not provide tea/coffee making facilities, and was the most expensive hotel by far, (in a 5 week trip in USA), but left us disappointed. Leer más

The hotel room was spacious, and had a great view, including Chrysler Building. The rooms had two large, great beds and we slept very well. It was quiet. The hotel room we stayed in was not newly decorated, but it was well kept and looked nice and inviting. We were happy that the room was large and had two chairs available so that we could have two […] friends over for a visit. Had a very enjoyable stay. Housekeeping very good. Hotel bar very pricey but you expect that in NYC. A 20 min walk to Times Square, so a little quieter than some hotels. Nice Deli for Breakfast next door.

we had booked and paid for king room with breakky but when we got there they said they had got us booked in for x2 double even though i had the confirmation copy, girl said she couldnt do anything about it, peeved #1 (wanted king bc im pregnant and like space but still be next to partner) then we asked if breakfast was included the next day bc i was […] sure it was and she said "..no it's not included in the stay.." but when we got to Las Vegas and I pulled out the itinery for the next hotel i read that the hemsley should have included breakfast....very peeved. other than that the hotel was clean and sufficient Leer más

Very dusty furniture and there was no kettle or coffee making facilities. First time I had stayed at any hotel that didn't have this. Thankfully there was a Starbucks right across the street. The reception area is very impressive but the bell-boys are just plain abusive. I had one tiny shoulder bag in the storage room and the guy that went to retrieve […] it for me kind of hovered around waiting for a tip with no smile or no pleasant words. When he finally figured out that I was not going to tip him (for what?? carrying a 5kg bag 10 meters??) he stood right behind me complaining and making rude comments about how I had not tipped him. I generally tip for good service, not because it is expected. I think that is the problem, it is expected. This is the first time I had not tipped in my entire trip. The location was great. Very close to Grand Central terminal and the check-in/out receptionists were very helpful and provided a map of the city.
